Laura Laabs’ directorial debut, “Red Stars Upon the Field,” has been granted international distribution rights by The Playmaker. This film will first appear on the international stage at the International Film Festival Rotterdam after its initial screening at the Filmfestival Max Ophüls Preis in Germany. The Playmaker plans to introduce this movie to global audiences at next month’s European Film Market in Berlin.
In my perspective as a passionate movie enthusiast, this film revolves around the unearthing of a skeleton hidden in a rural East German moor, stirring intrigue among the locals. Who was this person? A soldier who deserted from the Wehrmacht in 1944? A farmer on the brink, hailing from one of East Germany’s agricultural cooperatives before the shift to capitalism? Or possibly a mysterious figure linked to a clandestine operation against the Red Army Faction’s left-wing terrorists? As the layers of history unfold in this captivating mystery, a century of Germany’s past comes back to life.
Moritz Hemminger, the leader of sales and procurement at The Playmaker, commented: “The movie ‘Red Stars Over the Field’ shines with inventiveness. It artfully blends crucial moments of German history with an exhilarating murder mystery plot.
I had the privilege of working on “Red Stars Over the Field” with Amerikafilm, and let me tell you, this movie packs a punch. The visuals are stunningly impressive, and the story is as compelling as it gets. Given the political climate we’re currently experiencing, I believe the timing for its release, coinciding with Germany’s elections, couldn’t be more perfect.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that this movie was collaboratively brought to life by ZDF/Arte, WDR, and SR. The making of this masterpiece was generously backed by numerous entities, including the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM), German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), German Federal Film Board (FFA), Filmförderung Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, and Kuratorium junger deutscher Film.
The local theatrical distributor is Farbfilm Verleih.
In her debut documentary film titled “Spinach & Sugar,” Laabs showcased her Jewish grandmother, Sibylle Gerstner, who was an artist, author, and pioneer of the East German fashion magazine “Sibylle.” This movie garnered recognition as the most forward-thinking short film at Visions du Réel in Nyon, Switzerland.
In the Biennale of Moving Images held in Frankfurt, Laabs’ second movie, “Volksbühne,” was honored with an award for promising young talent.
Her graduation film “Melusine” was funded by Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg and aired on television.
In collaboration with Hessischer Rundfunk, Laabs orchestrated the television movie titled “Country Girls,” and was also the producer of the UFA-produced TV series, “Spotlight.
