‘Les Hijabeuses’ Secures 2025 Action Grant: A Game-Changer for Women in Sports!

The 2025 Action Grant was awarded to the documentary “Les Hijabeuses” by Breaking Through The Lens, a non-profit organization that specializes in funding solutions to tackle gender disparity within the movie industry.

In this UK movie titled “Les Hijabeuses,” which marks the second victory since the grant initiative started, a prize of 10,000 Euros is awarded. This compelling film spotlights a team of Muslim ladies soccer players in Paris who are battling for their space on the field amidst discrimination. Erin Sayder and Rita Baghdadi share the roles as co-directors and producers, while Camilla Hall serves as the executive producer.

Sayder expressed great excitement upon receiving a grant from a groundbreaking and significant organization. This grant has filled him with a surge of enthusiasm, motivation, and self-assurance. The backing will play a vital role in our effort to share an engaging and enlightening tale, during a time that seems particularly fitting,” Sayder stated.

Thanks to the funding, our film crew can shoot in Paris while we follow the progress of our EU court case and start our upcoming football season. I’m deeply appreciative of Breaking Through the Lens’ backing,” she concluded.

The Action Grant offers financial support to filmmakers engaged in the production of either a documentary or full-length movie, which are currently prepared for filming but require funding to advance their development. Individuals who might be underrepresented due to their gender, such as women, transgender individuals, and nonbinary people, are encouraged to apply for this grant.

In 2023, entries from 54 different nations were presented for review. By next year, BTTL will group the five chosen finalists into a 2025 cohort that offers mentorship opportunities and the chance to showcase their work at Cannes Film Festival. Some of the other finalists include “May You Outlive Us” by Isabelle Mecattaf, “The Dead Zone” by Emily Thomas, “Lux Noctis” by Damiana Acuña, and “In Case of Apocalypse” by Olivia Peace.

2023 Action Grant awardee for the movie “Brides,” is set to debut at Sundance this Friday. Producer Nicky Bentham expressed her excitement about the premiere, stating, “We are thrilled to unveil ‘Brides’ at Sundance alongside our partners at Breaking Through The Lens. Winning the first Action Grant significantly impacted our film, and the BTTL team continuously encouraged us throughout the production journey, even stepping in to secure private funding when an unforeseen budget shortfall occurred.
