Wouldn’t it be wonderful to accompany Judi Dench to every event? On Trini Woodall’s Fearless podcast, Dench revealed that her deteriorating eyesight has made it challenging for her to go out alone. “I always have someone with me now,” she said. “I can’t see and I might walk into something or fall over.” Dame Judi was diagnosed with macular degeneration in 2012, and by 2019, she had to stop driving due to its severity. According to the Cleveland Clinic, it is the most common cause of vision loss in individuals aged 60 and above.
Despite the challenging situation with macular degeneration, there’s a silver lining: it provides an opportunity for Dench to avoid press events, as she confessed her uneasiness about such occasions. “I’ve always been nervous,” she admitted. “I don’t know why. I’m not good at it at all. Not at all. And I wouldn’t be now. Fortunately, I don’t have to be now because I can convincingly pretend to have poor vision.” However, Dench clarified in 2023 that this isn’t exactly pretending; macular degeneration has indeed made it difficult for her to memorize lines, as she previously relied on her exceptional photographic memory. “It’s challenging if I have a substantial role,” she stated at the time, expressing her ongoing struggle to find a solution.
