The creators of Celeste, known as Extremely Ok Games, have recently shared that their upcoming title, Earthblade, will not proceed as planned. This choice was made in December, but the team felt it necessary to first come to terms with this information before making a public announcement.
In my enthusiasm as a fan, I’d like to share some insights from Director Maddy Thorson’s final blog post. The primary reason for the project’s cancellation was centered around disputes regarding the Celeste intellectual property rights, details of which Earthblade Studios has chosen to keep confidential. Despite resolving these issues, founding member Pedro Medeiros bid farewell to Earthblade in November and is now immersed in creating his new game, Neverway.
Due to Medeiros leaving the team, Thorson and programmer Noel Berry took a fresh look at Earthblade, a project that held potential but was behind schedule given its extended development timeframe.
Thorson stated that Celeste’s achievement put a significant demand on us to create something more impressive with Earthblade, which is why working on it has become so tiring for us. He clarified that Pedro isn’t responsible for this situation; instead, the separation from him helped us realize we’ve strayed off course. This recognition and acceptance of our mistakes have brought about a sense of relief, though I have many other feelings about it as well.
Due to the circumstances, several developers at Earthblade have decided to depart, leaving only Thorson and Berry who are now focusing on more compact tasks and experimenting with new prototypes. Thorson openly acknowledged that expanding the team following Celeste’s success was unsuccessful, but remains optimistic that Earthblade will recover and utilize the lessons they’ve learned from their development process.
Initially unveiled in the year 2021, Earthblade had an initial scheduled release date in 2024. Unfortunately, its launch was postponed from that year, with no new information given until today.
