How Far Along Is Mass Effect 5? Former Dev Provides Some Insight

Since Dragon Age: Veilguard has been released and BioWare is now able to focus their resources on the fifth installment of Mass Effect, players are understandably getting eager. However, as per former executive producer Mark Darrah, it might take a while for BioWare to fully kick-start the game development process.

Darrah explained in a recent video about Veilguard production that BioWare isn’t prepared for a sudden influx of 250-300 team members working on Mass Effect. Previously, when BioWare focused on a single project like Anthem or Veilguard, that project was already operating at full capacity and could take all available resources due to its established infrastructure, allowing it to absorb everything.

As a fellow gamer, let me clarify something about Mass Effect 5. While I’ve noticed some folks from The Veilguard project joining the Mass Effect team, others are venturing off to different corners of Electronic Arts (EA) because, truth be told, Mass Effect isn’t quite ready for them yet.

Darrah spent over two decades with BioWare, so even though he’s no longer an employee, his extensive experience likely gives him a deep understanding of the studio’s operations. Moreover, the absence of promotional materials for Mass Effect 5 indicates that its production is probably still at an early stage. It was initially unveiled in 2020, but since then, BioWare has been unusually quiet about it.

Darrah expressed that BioWare’s decision to concentrate on one game at a time could be beneficial. This strategy allows BioWare, for the first time perhaps, to fully dedicate their resources and efforts to a single project. In essence, they can pour all their skill and determination into achieving a singular goal: creating the best Mass Effect game possible.
