The TV series “Cobra Kai” is drawing to its conclusion, with the last five episodes set to premiere on Netflix in February. Although it’s not the absolute end, as Daniel will also appear in the upcoming “Karate Kid” film hitting theaters soon, this marks the finale for the television adaptation.

One of many upcoming Netflix releases includes a variety of films and series. These include “Kinda Pregnant”, a romantic comedy starring Amy Schumer, an animated film based in the world of “The Witcher”, and “Running Point” with Kate Hudson portraying the president of a renowned professional basketball team. If you’re interested in movies on Netflix (a surprising notion!), there are options such as “Parasite”, “The Nice Guys”, “Train to Busan”, and “Despicable Me 4”. Movies, it seems, continue to be a popular choice.

Orion and the Dark

If the movie plot of a young boy jotting down his apprehensions and phobias in a diary seems reminiscent of Charlie Kaufman’s style, it’s because Kaufman was actually involved in adapting Netflix’s “Orion and the Dark.” This animated film might appear to be a simpler version of “Inside Out” at first glance, but it’s far stranger and more eerie. The protagonist, 11-year-old Orion, encounters Dark, his greatest fear personified, who surprisingly turns out to be less menacing than anticipated. Together, they embark on a global journey, where Orion encounters various manifestations of nighttime phenomena such as Sleep, Sweet Dreams, and Mysterious Noises. The story indeed revolves around conquering fears, but it also delves into unforeseen friendships, the complex process of forgiveness, and the existential dilemmas that many children experience.

Hit Man

In Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,” Glen Powell shines in his leading role, portraying a college professor who moonlights as a fake hit man. This film is based on a true story, where the protagonist dons various disguises to entrap potential killers for the local police department. However, everything changes when he encounters a woman planning to hire a hitman against her abusive husband. The film, titled His Three Daughters, filmed entirely within one apartment, is visually striking, and the trio delivers remarkable performances, displaying a captivating chemistry with one another.

The Remarkable Life of Ibelin

In the realm of documentaries, I found myself captivated by none other than “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin“, a truly exceptional production from 2024. This film, inspired by the blog of Mats Steen and the memories shared by his friends and family, weaves together the tale of a Norwegian man whose life was cut short by a degenerative muscle disease at just 24 years old.

In the digital realm of World of Warcraft, where Mats’ character Ibelin Redmoore embarked on thrilling adventures with his online companions, the film painstakingly reconstructs Mats’ life, both in the real world and within the game. Leveraging digital animation that mirrors WoW‘s unique game engine, the movie brings to life Mats’ existence in this virtual universe, a place where he found solace and lived out the love and excitement that his condition denied him in reality.

Don’t Move

In crafting an authentic original thriller, Don’t Move turned out to be an engaging delight. The story follows Iris (Kelsey Asbille), a mourning mother who becomes the victim of a serial killer. After managing to break free, she learns that he has administered a paralytic substance into her system, gradually rendering her immobile. Her only chance for survival is to outrun the killer before her body completely seizes up. The concept is intriguing and delivers an intense viewing experience, with its lean 92-minute runtime ensuring it never overstays its welcome.

Martha

It’s high time for an insightful and engaging documentary on Martha Stewart, and “Martha” certainly lives up to the hype. Directed by R.J. Cutler, who has previously worked on films like “The War Room,” “The September Issue,” and “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry,” this film is both comprehensive and entertaining, offering an appetizing biography of one of the original lifestyle influencers. The movie handles Stewart’s intricate life story with curiosity and finesse. Even if you’re not a die-hard Martha Stewart fan (or have merely caught a glimpse or two from her cooking variety show with Snoop Dogg), “Martha” is sure to convert you into one.

Hot Frosty

Absolutely, we’re including the holiday romantic comedy starring the enchanting hunky snowman who turns into a man and falls for a solitary woman in our top Netflix films of the year. The film may seem absurd at first glance, but let me tell you, “Hot Frosty” is laugh-out-loud self-deprecating, mocking its own outlandish premise while simultaneously captivating viewers with its charm. It’s as if a six-pack sporting snowman could win your heart!

The Piano Lesson

The 1987 play “The Piano Lesson” by August Wilson is brought to life on stage with Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Erykah Badu, Ray Fisher, and Danielle Deadwyler. This family drama centers around a piano that was carved by an enslaved ancestor, and the family’s differing opinions on its fate during and after the Great Depression. The story unfolds as we follow a brother and sister, along with other family members whose lives have been influenced in diverse ways by this very piano. Produced by Denzel Washington, it’s a captivating Southern Gothic tale featuring standout performances from some of today’s most influential stars.

Jaume Collet-Serra is often overlooked as the mastermind behind nail-biting thrillers that unfold on diverse transportation systems. His collaborations with Liam Neeson, such as “Non-Stop” and “The Commuter,” feature high-stakes action on an airplane and a commuter train respectively. In his newest film, “Carry-On,” the action shifts to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Here, Taron Egerton stars as a dedicated TSA agent who, on his first day, finds himself entangled in a terror plot that seems inescapable. Jason Bateman delivers a chilling performance as the unnamed villain, communicating with his target primarily through an earpiece, while they both chase a dangerous suitcase across the bustling airport on Christmas Eve. This film can be seen as a modern-day “Die Hard,” and the kind of long, breathless running scenes that Tom Cruise might envy.
