Over the past two years, Julio Rojas, a Chilean screenwriter, director, and science fiction author renowned for his work on “Caso 63” and Miguel León, director whose recent projects include the critically acclaimed “El Secreto del Doctor Grinberg” (2020) and the popular Netflix series “La Dama del Silencio” (2023), have been investigating one of the most enigmatic and contentious figures in extraterrestrial research, Billy Meier.
The pair is collaborating with Maquina Vega, a fresh production company having offices in Los Angeles and Mexico City, in conjunction with Alazraki Entertainment led by “Father of the Bride” Gary “Gaz” Alazraki and Alisa Tager, on a documentary called “I Want to Believe.” This film is expected to provide an extraordinary perspective on Meier’s lifelong questionable assertions.
Swiss native Billy Meier asserts that he has been communicating with extraterrestrial life forms since he was only five years old, back in 1942. His images of UFOs against the tranquil Swiss countryside sparked a frenzy in the 1970s, elevating him to the role of a spiritual guide and a renowned expert in UFO research worldwide. Even before ‘The X-Files’ series, his work graced the poster for the show, but a legal dispute eventually led to the famous image being removed.
As a die-hard movie buff, I found myself on an intriguing journey, initially chasing the legendary UFO snapshot that had left its mark in pop culture history. But it soon became more than just a quest; it turned into an all-consuming passion for both Miguel and me, as we delved deeper to uncover the truth behind this mysterious image. The photo, taken in Switzerland back in 1976 – long before Photoshop or AI took over – seemed to cast a spell over countless people. So, we traced its origins from the Swiss countryside to Washington D.C., from a cozy bar in Oslo to the Vatican Observatory at Castel Gandolfo, then on to Mexico City and London. Each location, each witness offered a distinct piece to this captivating puzzle that seemed to keep expanding like a never-ending rabbit hole.
In the production of the movie, Rojas journeyed to Switzerland to converse with Meier in a discussion that mingled fantasy and fact. This setup suits Leon perfectly, a director known for merging reality and fiction in his work. With such a skillset, Leon would be ideal for capturing the elusive quality of Meier’s assertions on film.
Leon describes it as a thought-provoking mystery story that takes you on an exciting journey,” he says. “It’s like a modern-day Tower of Babel, as it was shot over nearly two years across seven different countries, in pursuit of an elusive photograph that blurs the lines between what is real and what is imagined.
The cinematography for the film is crafted by Carlos Muñoz Gómez-Quintero, an accomplished director of photography from Barcelona with almost two decades of experience under his belt. It’s anticipated that Muñoz’s talent for capturing natural light and creating striking interior settings will add a distinctive visual richness to the documentary.
Máquina Vega produces the documentary titled ‘I Want to Believe’, with additional backing from Mauricio Vázquez, a dedicated Mexican businessman and benefactor who is deeply invested in sharing the tale of Meier.
Producer Moisés Chiver shares that Machine Vega is on the lookout for fresh ideas and content that significantly impact various cinematic genres. The intriguing tale, which seamlessly blends reality, science fiction, and dreams, featuring Julio Rojas and Miguel León, immediately caught our attention. The distinctive perspectives of these creators and their artistic pursuit align perfectly with the project’s core, resulting in a captivating narrative that has left us spellbound.
Julio Rojas notes that ‘I Want to Believe: In Search of an Impossible Photo’ is not only a deep exploration but also a contemplation on the essence of truth and belief in our peculiar era, characterized by indifference towards these concepts.
