According to Christopher McQuarrie, one viewer came very close to suffering a heart attack while watching the movie “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
The 56-year-old director is directing the latest Tom Cruise movie and shared that an intense action sequence almost resulted in a medical incident.
McQuarrie shared with Empire Magazine: “During a private screening, someone remarked, ‘I felt smothered during the whole scene. I came close to having a panic attack.’ To which I responded, ‘It seems we achieved our goal.’
The director has assured us that the upcoming eighth installment of the franchise, scheduled for release in May, will offer fans a deeper look into the characters Grace (portrayed by Hayley Atwell), Degas (Greg Tarzan Davis), and Paris (Pom Klementieff). This exploration will also delve into their intricate relationships with Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise.
He mentioned: “Unexpected alliances arise when the world is ending, and I’m eager for folks to witness the transformation of Paris, Degas, and Grace.
McQuarrie shared his preference for avoiding stereotypes in the movies, ensuring that characters aren’t limited to being tech geniuses or action heroes only.
As a dedicated film lover, I’ve found that when it comes to the “Mission” series, the films often have a life of their own. If you expect a character to act in a certain way based on your specifications, you might be let down. However, if you approach it indirectly and allow yourself to be guided by the movie’s unique flow, you’ll find that it offers unexpected rewards, leading you to actions you wouldn’t have thought possible.
Speaking as a fervent admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement about Shea Whigham returning to portray the intelligence officer Jasper Briggs in the upcoming Mission: Impossible film, titled Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. This man himself has assured us fans that we are in for an “amazing” ride!
During an interview with MovieWeb, the 56-year-old actor expressed his excitement: “I truly believe it will be fantastic. I really do, thanks to Tom and McQuarrie… I need to be cautious. I can’t reveal too much or else I get into trouble, and I’ve already found myself in hot water.
I find it wonderful being surrounded by these individuals who have such a strong passion for cinema. Tom, in particular, is genuinely sincere when expressing his love for films and encouraging others to watch them… It’s no wonder they keep improving with each new Mission film.
Among the cast members, Whigham isn’t alone in praising the upcoming movie; Simon Pegg, portraying secret agent Benji Dunn in the spy series, firmly believes it will be the “superior” film within the franchise.
He shared on the “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum” podcast that he has completed filming, with only a single day of pick-ups remaining. After viewing it, he expressed that it is incredibly wild, utterly astonishing – it’s completely bananas!
In an interesting tidbit, the performer from Shaun of the Dead mentioned that Tom Cruise, his fellow actor, executed incredible stunts for the film, which are sure to amaze spectators.
He added: “His actions here are truly astonishing. This, in my opinion, is his finest work yet. And I don’t praise it merely out of obligation or flattery; it promises to be exceptional.
Every Mission: Impossible Movie, Ranked From Worst to Best
7. Mission: Impossible II (2000)
John Woo’s next operatic thriller after “Face/Off” was “M:I-2“. While some people today might dismiss it as a laughable disaster compared to “Face/Off”, an immortal ’90s classic, I believe it deserves more credit. In the grand scheme of the Mission: Impossible franchise, it may be the weakest, but if we were to compare it to other movie series, it would hold its ground as a solid, middle-of-the-pack entry.
Just like “Face/Off”, “M:I-2” features characters with the ability to wear each other’s faces, causing confusion and deception among their adversaries. The film also incorporates a repeated monologue involving the legend of Bellerophon and Chimera, symbolizing a super-virus and its antidote, emphasizing that every hero needs an adversary, much like both sides of the law are locked in an eternal, symbiotic dance according to Woo’s style.
6. Mission: Impossible III (2006)
Just like Mission 2 significantly differed from Mission 1, Mission: Impossible 3 took a drastic turn from both. This time around, Ethan Hunt is leading a peaceful life as a family man and the trainer for the IMF’s field agents, until he’s pulled back into action to save his former student (Keri Russell) and later his wife (Michelle Monaghan). The narrative and structure are heavily influenced by director J.J. Abrams’ own work on Alias, making it less typical of the Mission: Impossible series. However, what truly sets Mission: Impossible 3 apart is Philip Seymour Hoffman’s chilling portrayal of the villainous Owen Davian, and in one scene, his remarkable performance as Tom Cruise disguised in an IMF mask to impersonate Owen Davian.
5. Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation (2015)
It’s possible to consider that “Rogue Nation” might not have surpassed “Ghost Protocol” entirely; however, the daring scene where Tom Cruise clings onto the door of a cargo plane during takeoff certainly aimed to outdo it significantly. This movie is packed with cool devices, but its standout feature is Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, a British agent who was disavowed and found herself undercover in “The Syndicate,” a sinister counterpart to the IMF. Ilsa and Ethan have an instant chemistry, adding a touch of sensuality to what has generally been a rather modest franchise, thanks to her stunning evening wear.
4. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
In the initial installment of two successive “Mission: Impossible” movies, there’s a sense of wrapping up the series’ narrative thus far, as it’s filled with references to all six preceding films. It also serves as an extension of Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie’s motifs from “Top Gun: Maverick,” where Cruise portrayed an old-school fighter against advanced technology (a theme effectively depicted using practical effects that would lose much of their impact if they were purely digital). In “Dead Reckoning,” Cruise physically confronts a malevolent computer; an A.I. deity capable of manipulating reality. Despite the title indicating ‘Part One,’ you won’t feel even slightly underwhelmed, thanks to several captivating scenes, such as that jaw-dropping stunt where Cruise rides a motorcycle off a cliff and then parachutes into the valley below.
3. Mission: Impossible (1996)
In the initial “Mission,” the intricacy might not have been as extensive, but the Ethan Hunt portrayed in this film is the same character who would captivate audiences for the subsequent 25 years. The first significant action he takes in this movie involves defying a direct command; shortly after, his mission is to rescue a teammate; next, he hurls a stick of explosive chewing gum at a massive aquarium to evade his superior at the IMF and embark on an unauthorized operation to clear his name by breaching the most protected computer system worldwide. Consistently throughout the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, Ethan Hunt remains true to this character: He prioritizes people over institutions, isn’t deterred by laws or rules when serving a higher purpose, and never accepts that any mission is beyond reach.
2. Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol (2011)
In my opinion, it’s hard to decide which “Mission: Impossible” movie tops the chart, but when it comes to the most impressive sequence within the series, I can’t help but single out one. That would be the scene from “Ghost Protocol,” where Ethan Hunt and his team execute an intricately designed deception on the Burj Khalifa – the tallest building in the world. This involves Tom Cruise hanging precariously off the side of this skyscraper, which adds a thrilling edge to the scene. However, the main drawback is the villain, portrayed by the late Michael Nyqvist, who appears to be a typical antagonist with standard objectives.
1. Mission: Impossible — Fallout (2018)
The movie “Fallout” combines the most thrilling aspects from various Mission: Impossible films into a single package. It offers quick-paced action, sparkling dialogue, mind-blowing visuals, unexpected plot turns, ambiguous character loyalties, and a hint of complex romantic entanglements between Ethan Hunt, Ilsa Faust, and his wife Julia. Tom Cruise is seen navigating a helicopter and performing HALO jumps, though not necessarily in that sequence. (To be fair, given it’s Tom Cruise we’re discussing, it’s somewhat surprising he didn’t attempt to HALO jump onto a moving helicopter and then fly it himself!)
