Lately, it’s been confirmed that Sony scrapped a live-service game under development at Bend Studio, known for Days Gone. A member from the studio has since reacted to this news, expressing gratitude towards fans for their heartfelt support and clarifying that the team remains eager to create “awesome stuff.
In a concise manner, community manager Kevin McAllister expressed his gratitude. He thanked everyone for their kindness and appreciation, particularly those who reached out. A quick note: our team is still excited about developing exciting things.
It turns out that neither Bend’s live-action game nor the rumored God of War live-service game under development at Bluepoint have been officially announced. Interestingly, both projects have been called off, as confirmed by Sony in a statement to Bloomberg. The reason given was that they were terminated after a recent evaluation.
In 2023, Sony leadership announced their plan to launch just six live-service games in the upcoming period, a decrease from the original twenty-four. At that time, they expressed their intention to prioritize quality over the number of projects. It’s common for games that enter development not to reach completion; this is an inherent aspect of the creative process.
Instead of normal, however, Sony’s unexpected action was quite unusual. They abruptly halted the operation of the multiplayer live-service game, Concord, and shut down its development studio, Firewalk. Sony swiftly terminated the game right after its release, offering refunds to all players.
2019 saw the release of the last game from Bend Studio, titled Days Gone, and it appears that a follow-up may not be in the works. However, Bend Studio announced in June 2024 that they are working on a new intellectual property (IP). This project might have been the canceled live-service game originally planned. With no sign of a Days Gone sequel on the horizon, a movie based on Days Gone and featuring motorcycles is now being developed instead.
