Josh Gad came close to obtaining a part in the 2009 science fiction blockbuster “Avatar,” but his physical appearance did not fully match the type that director James Cameron was seeking.
In his recently published memoir titled “In Gad We Trust,” the actor from “Frozen” narrates an episode where, eager to escape his Broadway role in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” he ventured to audition for various TV and movie projects. Notably, one of the earliest opportunities he pursued was a part in a new production by James Cameron named “Avatar.
He mentioned that he received a call not long after recording himself, saying Cameron wanted him to travel to Los Angeles for a last round of auditions at his Lightstorm studio,” he explained. If selected, Gad would have portrayed the character who was Jake Sully’s (Sam Worthington) friend and interpreter to the Na’vi alien race.

He stated that right after recording himself, he got a call inviting him to Los Angeles for a final audition at Cameron’s Lightstorm offices. If chosen, Gad would have played the part of Jake Sully’s (Sam Worthington) friend and translator to the Na’vi alien race.
Gad went on, “It seems I didn’t secure the part because, although James Cameron reportedly appreciated my performance during the audition, when they transformed me into a digital Avatar, I was allegedly made to look like a tall, plump Smurf.
In “Avatar,” the character usually portrayed by Joel David Moore, known for his role as Norm Spellman, stepped into a significant part. He’s not only a trusted ally to Jake Sully but also an authority on the Na’vi language.
Released on December 18, 2009, the movie “Avatar” has become the highest-earning film ever, amassing approximately $2.9 billion globally so far. Its sequel, titled “Avatar: The Way of Water,” is currently in third position with a total gross of around $2.3 billion.
At the 2024 D23 Exhibition, it was disclosed that the third “Avatar” movie will be called “Avatar: Fire and Smoke.” This sequel is scheduled for release on December 19, 2025.
