BBC Studios Reviewing India Production Operations, No Decision Made on Exit From Country

It’s being said that BBC Studios India might be planning to leave the subcontinent, which could lead to significant changes in the regional content creation landscape, as suggested by news reports from local sources.

As a movie critic looking back on my experiences with a once-prominent studio, I recall their successes with adaptations of shows like “Criminal Justice” and “The Office,” which resonated strongly with Indian audiences while maintaining a British flavor. However, whispers from within the industry hint at difficulties they’ve faced in expanding their operations and stiff competition from domestic production houses and streaming behemoths. If these rumors prove true, this studio’s departure could signify the closing of an intriguing chapter in India’s ever-evolving entertainment industry, leaving us all pondering the future of current and upcoming projects.

As a dedicated film enthusiast, I’m always on the lookout for ways to enhance the cinematic experience. Right now, we’re taking a close look at our production processes in India, examining how we can make them more streamlined and impactful. However, it’s important to note that no final decisions have been made yet.

This month, Sameer Gogate, the general manager for BBC Studios’ Indian productions, announced his resignation from his position which he took up in 2019. During his tenure, BBC Studios India produced three seasons of “Criminal Justice,” as well as adaptations of shows such as “The Office” and “Press” titled “Broken News.” Additionally, they created unscripted formats like “Dancing With The Stars,” locally known as “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.

Some standout BBC Studios India productions encompass “Out of Love,” an Indian remake of the show “Doctor Foster,” and “Gaalivaana,” a gripping crime thriller in the Telugu language. Furthermore, BBC Studios India is responsible for the upcoming Indian adaptation of the reality series “The Traitors.” This new version will be hosted by Karan Johar on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service.
