‘Kneecap’ Getting Irish Re-Release Following BAFTA Nomination Success (EXCLUSIVE)

This week, Rich Peppiatt’s critically-acclaimed film comedy-biography titled “Kneecap” returns to Irish theaters following its six BAFTA nomination wins.

In 2024, Wildcard Distribution – who were involved in its production – will reintroduce the Irish film “Kneecap” nationwide in Ireland. This is a year after it made history as the first Irish-language film to debut at the Sundance Film Festival, where it quickly gained attention and was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics.

Discussing the remarkable journey of the band “Kneecap” and their commitment to the Irish language, “Kneecap” has made history at home by setting new records. Last year, it held the broadest theatrical debut for a non-English film and grossed $1.5 million, making it the highest-grossing Irish-language movie. There’s optimism that its continued success during awards season, with whispers of an Oscar nomination coming up this week, could further boost these numbers in local cinemas. Interestingly, “The Quiet Girl,” which was the first ever Irish-language film to be nominated for an Oscar in 2023, saw more than half its Irish box office revenue after its nomination.

Gillian Cooper, Wildcard’s distribution head, shared her enthusiasm about ‘Kneecap’ returning to Irish cinemas on the one-year anniversary of its sensational world premiere at Sundance. ‘Kneecap’ has been nothing short of extraordinary in their endeavors, and this spirit is evident throughout the film. Whether it’s awards, festivals, or the cinema release itself, everything associated with ‘Kneecap’ has been remarkable, pioneering, and record-breaking. It’s heartening to witness Irish independent film receiving such widespread acclaim, and we’re thrilled that cinemas are eager to showcase ‘Kneecap’ once more to honor its impressive accomplishments over the past year.

Simultaneously earning a stack of BAFTA nominations, “Kneecap” also secured 17 nods from the Irish Film & TV Academy just recently. Towards the end of last year, it reigned supreme at the British Independent Film Awards, pocketing seven accolades, one of which was best film.

The movie is up for various categories at the BAFTA Film Awards on February 16, including Best British Film, Debut Film, Original Screenplay, Non-English Language Film, Best Casting, and Editing.
