Film Distribution Company, Syndicato Film Sales, will represent two films selected for the Berlin International Film Festival: “Paul” directed by Denis Côté, premiering in the Documentary section of Panorama, and “Sirens Call,” co-directed by Miri Ian Gossing and Lina Sieckmann, which is part of the Forum program.
Cote’s documentary revolves around Paul, a person battling depression and social anxiety. To find solace, he takes up cleaning for dominant women, adopting the role of the submissive “Cleaning Simp Paul” in the process. He attempts to alleviate his loneliness by revealing his quirky routines on various social media platforms.
As a film enthusiast, I found “Paul” to be a captivating, unbiased portrayal from the heart of its quirky yet lovable protagonist. This movie offers a unique and engaging perspective on our universal journey towards inner peace.
The production duo behind this project is Hany Ouichou and Karine Bélanger, hailing from Coopvidéo Montreal in Canada. In Canada, the distribution responsibilities lie with Métropole Films.
Xavier Dolan’s debut film “Northern States” (2005) received the Golden Leopard prize for Best Film at Locarno Film Festival. His film “Vic+Flo Saw a Bear” was honored with the Silver Bear for Innovation at Berlinale in 2013, and his movie “Social Hygiene” won the best director award in the Encounters section at Berlinale in 2021.
In their first full-length production, Gossing and Sieckmann delve into the world of merfolk enthusiasts, accompanied by performance artist and mermaid Una (played by Gina Rønning). This film is a unique blend of science fiction, road trip genre, and documentary, serving as a platform to discuss topics such as collective pain, body politics, and the desire for lifelong transformation, as suggested in promotional materials.
In a statement, the directors explained: “Back in 2017, we discovered online about a unique group in Portland, Oregon, who self-identified as mer-folk. They weren’t just dressing up as sirens in silicone tails; they were living this identity daily. Upon meeting Una the Mermaid for the first time in Portland – a psychologist and trauma advocate in her everyday life – we immediately felt a profound bond. Una and her group mirrored many aspects of our concept for our siren character, which we had been envisioning for some time. This siren embodied interdisciplinary knowledge, bridging the gaps between human, nature, and machine, all while seeking new ways to coexist with each other and the world.
This movie is jointly created by Filmfaus, in partnership with Schalten Und Walten (an art collective led by Gossing and Sieckmann), as well as Elbe Stevens Films from the Netherlands and ZDF/Das kleine Fernsehspiel from Germany. The producers are Claus Herzog-Reichel and Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay. In simpler terms, multiple production companies are involved in making this film, with Filmfaus, Schalten Und Walten, Elbe Stevens Films, and ZDF/Das kleine Fernsehspiel all contributing to the project, and Claus Herzog-Reichel and Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay serving as the producers.
