Ever since the mobile game debuted in October, fans have eagerly awaited this functionality. However, it seems this new mechanism may come with conditions that some fans are not entirely pleased about.
Pokémon TCG Pocket trading details are not what fans were hoping for
For decades, Pokemon has been among the world’s most financially successful media franchises, if not the outright leader. This success is due in part to its extensive product line, which includes video games that sparked it all, a trading card game, numerous merchandise items, films, TV series, and more recently, highly popular mobile games such as Pokemon GO and the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket. Launched on October 30th, 2024, the latter title reportedly generated at least $200 million within its initial month, as per AppMagic’s reports via PocketGamer.biz.
On Thursday, developers shared news about an upcoming trading feature, which could enable numerous users to swap cards with friends – potentially fulfilling their desire for that elusive card to complete their collection. However, no specific launch date has been announced yet, only a vague timing in January. This announcement excites the game enthusiasts, but closer inspection of the details might cause concern.
According to the post from the official Pokémon TCG Pocket X/Twitter account:
Cards with a rarity of [diamond] 1 – [diamond] 4 and [star] 1 can be traded.
In essence, this implies that a significant number of the game’s most scarce cards cannot be traded. Instead, players who desire these elusive cards may find themselves persistently trying their fortune with daily packs or investing money to boost their chances, regardless of whether their friends possess multiple copies of the card they seek.
The update further clarifies that “Trading requires using consumed items” instead of introducing a new currency. Given the abundance of in-game currencies, players express concerns about this potentially being another to keep track of. However, there remains optimism that trading might utilize an existing currency within the game.
Disgruntled gamers are expressing their dissatisfaction on social media platforms, with many responses to the initial announcement highlighting that the term “trading” is in the game’s name, but it seems that this feature will be severely restricted within the gaming experience. On Reddit, some players have posed questions to their fellow gamers about whether these restrictions render trading redundant for those who have been diligently accumulating their collection since October.
The official Pocket X/Twitter account replied to their own post, saying:
It’s clear you have some apprehensions. As soon as this new feature is launched, feel free to give it a go and share your thoughts with us. By doing so, we can collectively shape the game into a more engaging experience for all players.
