Takeshi Kitano’s Genre-Bending ‘Broken Rage’ Sets Global Streaming Debut With Prime Video

Takeshi Kitano’s newest movie, “Broken Rage,” is scheduled for a worldwide release on Prime Video in February.

This genre-blending production, helmed by Kitano himself and featuring his acting talents, adopts a unique strategy by dividing its duration into two separate acts. The opening act offers a raw, suspenseful crime drama that revolves around a hitman navigating the treacherous waters between police and yakuza, while the latter part revisits the same plot but presents it in a comical light using self-mocking methods.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that an upcoming production has gathered a phenomenal cast, with the incomparable Tadanobu Asano taking the lead. This isn’t just any role for Asano; he’s teaming up with Kitano for the third time following their successful collaborations on “Zatōichi” (2003) and “Kubi” (2023). Nao Omori, another talented actor, is also part of this project, making it his sixth collaboration with Kitano. His impressive performances in films like “Dolls” (2002), “Achilles and the Tortoise” (2008), “Outrage Coda” (2017), and most recently “Kubi” (2023) have left a lasting impression.

The structure of the yakuza group showcases Shidō Nakamura, following his role in Kitano’s “Kubi” (2023), alongside experienced associate Hakuryu. The extensive cast also features Takashi Nishina, Shohei Uno, Shoken Kunimoto, Masato Yano, Shiro Maeda, Jun Akiyama, and new additions to the comedic side with Gekidan Hitori, Masanori Hasegawa, Azusa Babazono, and Mogura Suzuki making their initial appearances in a Kitano film. The music is composed by Shinya Kiyozuka.

In this version, I’ve aimed to make the text more accessible while maintaining its original meaning.

The movie, which Kitano himself refers to as an “innovative experiment,” delves into his intriguing idea of injecting humor into a violent film. Notably, after its screening at the 2024 Venice Film Festival Out of Competition, “Broken Rage” made history as the first Japanese production exclusively for streaming platforms to be selected for this prestigious event.

The movie is set to premiere worldwide on Amazon Prime Video on February 13th. It will be available at the same time in over 240 countries and territories, marking an expansion of the streaming service’s efforts towards creating original international content.
