SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers about “Wolf Man,” now playing in theaters.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share my anticipation for the latest offering, “Wolf Man,” directed by the talented Leigh Whannell. Following his impressive reimagining of another Universal Monsters classic, “The Invisible Man” in 2020, this new venture – a joint creation with his wife Corbett Tuck – promises to be another masterpiece filled with unexpected twists and turns that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. For a comprehensive look at the movie’s intriguing plotline, stay tuned for more details!
1995 marks the beginning of the movie. A youth named Blake (played by Zac Chandler) goes hunting with his gruff father Grady (Sam Jaeger), in the secluded Oregon wilderness. They become aware of peculiar sounds and what seems to be a predator tracking them. They ascend into a tree stand, locking the door behind them as the unusual noises draw near, only to fade once Grady fires a shot at it. In time, Blake picks up on his father conversing with a friend over the radio about an impending evil and the need to safeguard Blake from it.
Shift to present times, with Blake being portrayed by Christopher Abbott, who was last seen in “Kraven the Hunter” and previously starred in “Girls.” He’s married to Charlotte (Julia Garner), and they have a daughter named Ginger (Matilda Firth). Their marriage is facing challenges, and Blake fears he might be overly stern with his parenting, mirroring his strict father. However, he receives a notice declaring Grady as deceased, which means the Oregon house now belongs to him.
In present days, Blake (played by Christopher Abbott) is married to Charlotte and they have a daughter named Ginger. He’s worried about being too strict with his parenting like his father was. But then he learns Grady has died, so the Oregon house now belongs to him.
In an attempt to lift his family out of their current difficult situation, Blake persuades them to move temporarily from San Francisco to Oregon for a closer connection with nature. However, their journey doesn’t start smoothly; they swerve off the road to avoid hitting something, which lands their van in a dangerous predicament that requires them to exit through the windows. Unfortunately, during this ordeal, Blake sustains injuries from what appears to be a creature resembling a werewolf.
Over time, Blake transforms into the central character known as the Wolf Man, developing more fur, lengthening his limbs, and becoming increasingly unsightly. Despite this, he recognizes that he is the head of the family and devotes himself to protecting Charlotte and Ginger from the werewolf who infected him. A distinctive tattoo eventually reveals that the malevolent werewolf is Blake’s long-lost father. In a climactic confrontation between the two Wolf Men, Blake bites deeply into his father’s throat, resulting in his demise.
Nevertheless, this transformation doesn’t result in a joyful conclusion for Blake. Instead, he gradually loses touch with his human nature as he becomes more wolf-like. Consequently, he finds himself pursuing Charlotte and Ginger across the estate, unable to control his growing appetite. Not even a bear trap that ensnares him can halt him; he simply bites off his foot and continues bounding along on all fours.
In the same deer stand where Grady and Blake initially hid at the start of the movie, Charlotte and Ginger, armed with a weapon, find themselves waiting. Suddenly, they detect Blake approaching from above, his intentions clear when he exposes himself, signaling his desire to die. In response, Charlotte shoots him. As the film concludes, Charlotte and Ginger contemplate the stunning natural beauty encompassing the cabin, a reflection of the advice Blake had given them as they departed San Francisco for Oregon. The credits begin rolling!
