Civilization 7 Adds New Feature That Makes Every Game Worth Finishing

As I eagerly anticipate the arrival of Civilization 7, I can’t help but notice some notable shifts in its design that have me excited. Although it’s expected to retain the essence of past games, there are substantial modifications underway, starting with the separation of leaders and civilizations. Recently, Firaxis unveiled a novel mechanism for Civilization 7 that aims to make each game concluding feel rewarding. In my perspective, this is a significant step towards enhancing the overall gaming experience.

Civilization 7 Legends and Mementos to Make a Major Impact

After almost a decade in development, it’s not unexpected that Civilization 7 is focusing on improving issues found in earlier games and enhancing the strong points of this latest version. This was hinted at during early previews, as developers spoke about modifications to the age system and a focus on complex construction, which aim to mitigate the “runaway” effect seen in late-game Civilization 6, where the sheer number of actions per turn becomes difficult to manage due to its magnitude.

In the most recent developer’s diary for Civilization VII, they have revealed two new systems: Legends and Mementos. These are not limited to a single campaign, instead functioning as a broader progression system, often referred to as meta progression. This new feature aims to encourage players to see each game through to its conclusion by offering rewards.

If a strategy in Civilization 6 goes awry and victory seems unattainable, it can become challenging to justify persisting with the game until it ultimately ends in defeat. The AI may take a considerable amount of time to secure victory, and the escalating effects that made the late-game in Civilization 6 so lengthy also make clinging onto an inevitable loss seem fruitless. In Civilization 7, there will be rewards tied to paths and challenges that can provide long-term advantages even when you lose, making each game more worthwhile.

As a diehard fan, I’m thrilled about Civilization 7’s innovative approach! It introduces a Foundation Path that progresses with every game you play, enhancing your experience over time. But what truly excites me is the Leader Path, tailored to each leader with unique challenges. These paths offer exciting rewards, such as cool cosmetic collectibles to customize your player card, and Mementos that significantly affect gameplay. The cosmetics add a touch of personal flair, while the Mementos could potentially shift the course of your conquest!

In Civilization 7, each leader has a maximum of two Memento slots. Unlockable Mementos for these slots can be utilized by any character in the game, offering distinct benefits that range significantly. These Mementos will offer fresh ways for gamers to enhance their broader strategies in Civ 7. Some Mementos are linked to challenges, such as completing certain campaigns or specific tasks, which aims to motivate players to continue games where they might otherwise struggle to understand the storyline’s conclusion.

For those concerned about its effect on gameplay, the Mementos system in the game can be turned off during the creation process if desired for multiplayer and online matches. The developers have clarified that this system won’t work like a Battle Pass and no microtransactions will affect progress within it. As we approach the release of Civilization 7, it appears this feature may significantly enhance the overall gameplay experience, making each campaign completion truly rewarding.
