New Report Revealed God Of War And Another Unannounced Live Service Games Were Canceled By Sony

Shuhei Yoshida, former head of PlayStation, shared insights in a recent interview with Kinda Funny Games about his thoughts on a potential Bloodborne Remaster, the struggles of the PS Vita console, and his views on PlayStation’s live service strategy. The very next day, more trouble surfaced for PlayStation’s live-service strategy as Bloomberg reported that two additional live service games were axed by Sony.

Based on information from Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, it appears that two unspecified games were cancelled by Sony as confirmed by a company spokesperson. Sony also released a statement indicating they will persist in their plan to create and distribute gaming experiences encompassing both single-player and multiplayer modes.

Sony Cancels Two More PlayStation Projects

It appears that Sony is encountering difficulties with their live-service game strategy, as two unannounced projects have allegedly been scrapped. One of these was a God of War live service game being developed at Bluepoint Games, who are renowned for their work on Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and the Demon’s Souls remaster. The other project was in the hands of Bend Studio, the developers behind Days Gone. This decision to cancel these games followed a recent review at PlayStation Studios. A representative from the company confirmed that PlayStation will persist in creating and publishing both online multiplayer and single-player games.

The spokesperson for the company further explained to Bloomberg that “Bend and Bluepoint are skilled teams who play significant roles within PlayStation Studios. We are collaborating with each studio to decide on future projects.” So far, PlayStation Studios have had great success in the live service sector, as demonstrated by Arrowhead’s Helldivers 2, which has maintained its popularity in multiplayer despite some recent challenges, and NetEase Games’ Marvel Rivals, a superhero team-based PvP shooter that has achieved notable success.

Instead of Firewalk Studios’ Concord contrasting sharply with Helldivers 2, which ceased operations just two weeks into release and the studio closed in October 2024, it remains uncertain if the recent cancellations will lead to redundancies at these studios. Nevertheless, a memo sent to Bloomberg reveals that they aim to collaborate closely with these mentioned studios to decide on the best possible future steps “with the goal of minimizing any negative business effects.”
