Horizon Online, with more than one million players on servers, shows how much faith Sony has in game-services, despite Concord’s failure

The creators of the Horizon series are aiming, according to a job posting from Guerrilla Games studio, to attract over a million gamers to their multiplayer game.

On the developer’s main site, a job listing was posted seeking a senior engineer responsible for managing the network infrastructure of the team’s upcoming project (as reported by GamesRadar). From what we gather, suitable candidates must possess “verifiable background in constructing and maintaining multi-service systems with over 1 million users that are globally dispersed across multiple public cloud platforms.

It’s clear from the recent announcement that Guerrilla Games has been developing a multiplayer project within the Horizon series universe without disclosing its title. This project currently holds top priority for the studio, and they won’t start on the next main series installment until they’ve completed this game first.

In numerous instances, developers usually build in some extra capacity within their network infrastructure as a safeguard against connection issues with servers. However, they occasionally overlook the sheer volume of players aiming to join the game.

Despite the ambitious goal for over a million players, it might be overly optimistic given the current state of the game market and Sony’s recent online flop. It appears that Horizon Online, contrary to expectations, will not suffer the same fate as other game-services in development by Sony’s studios.
