The Sex Lives of College Girls Recap: Storytelling Hour

It appears there was some disagreement in last week’s episode, didn’t there? I can’t apologize for expressing my genuine thoughts (and I never will), but maybe we can find common ground in this week’s episode, which I found quite enjoyable overall. The humor seemed fitting, Lila made a return, and the universe they inhabited felt slightly more relatable to our own world.

As a cinema enthusiast, let’s focus on the key highlights of this episode, shall we? It’s quite obvious that following her conversation with Calvin, Kacey is ready to experience something new, if you catch my drift! She distributes gift cards for frozen yogurt, which seems to be the new trend at college campuses. She wants some space to prepare herself for a moment with Cooper, and her room is adorned in what feels like a Disney-inspired adult theme, complete with fairy lights, pink curtains, and a playlist featuring the most romantic Disney kissing scenes. Bela, slightly concerned, asks if Kacey wants feedback, to which she politely declines, and the girls cheer in response. I couldn’t help but chuckle! Kacey hurriedly dismisses them from her room, not ready to shed tears just yet. Whitney and I both question this, whispering “yet?” under our breaths, expressing our concern. The big question is when she intends to cry – before or after? My hunch is it’ll be afterwards.

Unfortunately, in the crucial moment, Kacey seems prepared while Cooper appears far from ready. The twinkling lights or the vague, unidentifiable tune playing in the background might be factors, but whatever it is, progress isn’t being made. Kacey feels so embarrassed that she wishes to discard those twinkle lights forever. She has a rehearsal for the musical “BREAD” later, and I’m delighted to rejoin the action; I hope for a song about dough! However, there are no advancements in the script or lyrics at this time. Surprisingly, the lead role had to be vacated! Kacey is eager to take it on, and Cooper supports her. This tech guy, whose identity I’m unaware of but who seems to favor Kacey, has also voiced his support. The professor agrees to let Kacey give it a shot. When Kacey expresses gratitude towards Cooper, she also apologizes for their less-than-ideal evening. He responds very kindly, and when he offers to choose the music, I can’t help but agree with Kacey – he seems like a real gem!

I’ve noticed an interesting turn of events: Kimberly and Brian are getting quite intimate, after they confessed their relationship to Professor Tig. These two seem to have found a new passion in discussing Proust, which apparently sparks their romance even further. It’s intriguing, isn’t it? I can’t help but wonder if there’s a Proust enthusiast among the faculty at Essex.

Anyway, their intimacy has escalated to such an extent that Brian requested a nude from Kimberly to hold him over until their next encounter. To my amazement, Kimberly found this process empowering. Given her stunning physique, I can understand why! She even offered to share her first-ever nudes with the girls, and the reactions were a mix of oohs, aahs, and giggles. They all approved, but Bela noticed that one image was live and contained her face. It’s amusing to think she deleted her Cinco de Mayo post to keep her archive clean, but I suppose this should be fine, as long as Brian deletes it for her, right?

If you’re at all taken aback by Brian, the once-sweet nerd, resisting to remove Kimberly’s photo and then making her feel disrespected for inquiring about it, you must not have encountered many men before! He seems to value his access to Kimberly’s picture over how she might feel, but eventually, he complies and deletes it while she looks on. At Sips, Lila reminds Kimberly of the cloud storage concept and assures her that the photo may still be saved elsewhere. Understandably anxious about returning to his room, Kimberly asks Lila for moral support. “Let’s go delete that picture of your ‘old ladies,'” she exclaims, closing the cafe on an incoming customer. And boy, are we glad she did!

As a movie buff, let me rephrase that scene: Despite Brian claiming I’m just being paranoid, his roommate chuckles from the shadows, hinting he saw the photo. He even calls me crazy, but I’ve had enough of this nonsense! I give him a swift kick to the groin and pin him down, giving Kimberly access to unlock his phone with her face. He can erase the pictures or I can dial his mom and let her know he’s a jerk. Quite an impressive display of Lila and Kimberly’s resourcefulness, indeed! And, oh boy, Brian, you really stepped in it this time!

It seems clear that the series has been setting up Whitney’s struggle with anxiety, as evidenced by her timid visit to mental health services, sleepless nights, and overloading herself with classes. However, the rapid resolution of this issue feels unexpected, almost too quick, don’t you think? Given the build-up, I expected a more complex journey for Whitney, perhaps encountering resistance from her friends, as that would be an opportunity to develop character growth. Instead, the reactions from her friends are surprisingly positive and supportive, which is great in terms of normalizing mental health discussions. However, considering this show is supposedly about friendship, I find it odd that Whitney’s mental health journey doesn’t seem to involve her friends more directly. It feels like they only offer support when it comes to dating, while ignoring other aspects of their lives. Although I’m not advocating for a return to the Bechdel test in 2025, I can’t help but feel that a conversation about something other than dating would be refreshing.

It turns out that Whitney’s therapist is just like a TV therapist – he provides helpful advice but in an unconventional manner that’s not typical of real-life therapists. In the first session, Whitney brings up a list of topics she prefers to avoid, such as her family and past relationships. “Understood! Well, that reduces the scope we can work on.” She then starts sharing her concerns about things she can’t stop worrying over, and yet finds herself unable to take a break despite wanting one. “Girl, you’re not asking for a break; you need one!” The therapist agrees with me, and although Whitney struggles to distinguish between what she wants and needs (we’re all in the same boat!), she feels motivated to take a day off. This realization came surprisingly quickly – only four minutes into their conversation. “Shall we discuss your parents’ divorce?

If you hadn’t considered Whitney’s soccer coach to be rude before due to his subtle coercion about steroids, this incident would certainly change your mind. She approached him to request a day off, but he dismissed her with a sneer, stating that there are no quitters on his team. Despite Whitney being new to the concept of a day off, I’m impressed by her assertiveness in standing up for herself and demanding rest. In fact, she was so persistent that she eventually decided to leave the team! I had a hunch this was imminent, so I’m not as shocked as they might want me to be about this development. And honestly, the ensuing anxiety attack in the quad wasn’t much of a surprise either! Canaan was there to comfort her, acting as a calming presence on the grass. Many still hold grudges against him for his past kiss with Kimberly, but I argue: it was never going to work out!!! Besides, they are both in college now; it’s no wonder they’re seen with each other’s former partners – isn’t that what college is for? Let’s be reasonable about the size of this college in rural Vermont!

This ties in with one of my issues I’ve mentioned before about the show: Taylor. Given my feelings towards her (ranging from indifference to anger), learning that she’s still with Ash and they’re planning to live together doesn’t elicit any particular emotion from me. However, this news sets Bela’s ‘Friendship-and-romantic-affairs-radar’ off because Taylor is the only student Bela cares about deeply. Bela believes it’s a risky move and seems oblivious to the fact that many lesbians can quickly form new relationships. She attempts to act as if she knows what’s best for Taylor, but Taylor isn’t listening at all. Additionally, she doesn’t seem interested in taking her carbon monoxide detector with its persistent beeping driving her mad. Bela appears worried, but I say let the door hit you on your way out!

Regarding Bela! She has a conversation with Arvind about his strong negative response to her past sexual encounters, and he expresses remorse. Though his apology is sincere, he seems unaware of why it was inappropriate. Moreover, he mentions his clean STI status before advising her to get an HPV test. Bela appears irritated and hurt by his assumption that she has sexually transmitted infections, but she doesn’t express this frustration to Arvind until she’s having lunch with the group. One might wonder why she didn’t share her feelings with him earlier or why she acted as if he had shared something new about her. As Bela vents about it, the rest of the girls laugh, and Whitney finds her hysterical. Kimberly suggests that Bela attend a storytelling event at Sips tonight; perhaps she should check it out. Interestingly, no one explicitly encourages her to go, but their suggestion implies that given her past interest in sex and comedy, attending such an event could be suitable for her.

At the storytelling event, it’s clear that Bela shares a strong connection with the humorous host Hailey, who happens to be a lesbian, that surpasses many other co-actors she’s worked with. It could be that blazer; after all, blazers can have quite an impact. Seeing her motivated to develop her own storytelling is exciting, and I applaud this effort! However, Arvind isn’t as enthusiastic. He dislikes the prospect of Bela discussing her personal life on stage, particularly her romantic experiences, leading them to decide to part ways. Frankly, I’m growing tired of the narrative that one can’t have a supportive partner and maintain a career like this!

Towards the end of the episode, she presents her work to Hailey, her leg jittering nervously. There’s an undeniable connection between them, but it seems unlikely this is meant to be a genuine relationship. I must admit, I really hope Bela’s character will explore bisexuality in the future, but it feels out of place with the current narrative. This is particularly evident when Taylor calls and Bela chooses to ignore it. As expected, we cut to Taylor who is, predictably, purchasing a bottle of vodka, making me wish I hadn’t said “Don’t let the door hit you.” Frankly, I’m disappointed that Bela hasn’t shown any comedic skills or personal growth throughout the season. Is she suddenly going to reveal her improvement as soon as she returns? It seems like the lessons learned this season are being discarded altogether.

Office Hours

I strongly believe that therapy is crucial for everyone. Unfortunately, at this point in time, I’m not ready for it as I’m still trying to analyze and learn from my past errors.

• Brian: “And what are you here for?” Lila: “Mostly chime-ins.”

It seems you have a dilemma; you want to enjoy meals from Arby’s, but you need to wear a tight karate gi for your blue belt test. Perhaps, after the test, you can treat yourself with a meal at Arby’s as a celebration.

Dear Ruby Cruz, I deeply apologize for your situation, but I’m absolutely delighted to learn that you’re excited about the season for “grilling cheese.
