Destiny 2’s SMGs Are Back and Ready to Wreak Havoc in PvP!

In the latest update, version 8.1.5.3, Bungie significantly boosted Submachine Guns (SMGs), making them highly effective in Player versus Player (PvP) matches within Destiny 2, and poised to rule The Crucible once more.

The significant modifications made were:

1. An enhancement, boosting their magazine capacity by approximately 10-15%.
2. A reversal of the Target Lock nerf, restoring the previously powerful advantage it provided.

Just a heads up: In Update 7.3.5, Target Lock was adjusted to take longer to activate on Submachine Guns. This change significantly decreased its effectiveness since multiple shots were needed before it would become active, rendering it almost useless in Player vs Player (PvP) situations where a kill can be achieved with just a few strategically placed shots.

The reversal of this change could significantly disrupt the PvP metagame. Previously, before the original adjustment, SMGs with target lock tended to rule close-quarter battles, and it’s likely they’ll regain that dominance once more.

Target Lock is back on the menu

In just a few years prior, around March 2024, The Immortal was considered one of the top primary weapons in The Crucible. However, The Strand SMG surpassed it with exceptional range and remarkable consistency, making it stand out among other options.

In Lightfall, the overwhelming power of The Immortal significantly influenced the decision to weaken Rangefinder’s SMG capabilities. Interestingly, this adjustment didn’t knock Rangefinder out of the competitive tier entirely; it continued to be a viable choice until Target Lock underwent its own nerf later on.

After the recent change (reverting the nerf), The Immortal can once again emerge, joining other potential top-tier picks such as Unending Tempest and Shayura’s Wrath. These choices have significantly improved with this update and could potentially cause issues during the upcoming Trials of Osiris weekend.

If you happen to have previously saved meta rolls for these weapons in your storage, it’s definitely worth revisiting them and using them again. But if you don’t possess any meta SMGs, I recommend paying Lord Shaxx a visit, focusing on Unending Tempest, and aiming to get a Dynamic Sway Reduction + Target Lock god roll as your best option.

Remember that Crucible weapons come with large perk selections. To improve your chances of getting the best combination of perks, it’s advisable to reset Shaxx’s reputation two or three times before using your Engrams. This allows you to reroll multiple perks in each column, enhancing your opportunity for a top-tier roll.
