David Lynch‘s works are often disquieting and mind-bending in different intensities; however, stories about the filmmaker himself are surprisingly warm and non-threatening. Did you know he was once an amateur weatherman or consumed around 20 cups of instant coffee every day? Isn’t that fascinating! If you’ve finished watching Twin Peaks: The Return, check out this compilation of hilarious David Lynch tales for some light reading.
He loves Mad Men so much, he refuses to call the actors by their real names.
Years ago, when Mad Men was airing on AMC, I had the privilege of meeting “Peggy” (Elisabeth Moss) and “Don” (Jon Hamm) at a gathering. To me, they were more than just actors; they were the embodiment of their characters. I admired them greatly and felt the show’s casting was exceptional, with brilliant writing and an immersive atmosphere. In my eyes, they were Peggy and Don. It was natural for me to address Peggy as “Peggy.”
Fortunately, they didn’t seem bothered by it, as I learned later. In Cologne, Germany, we even shared drinks together, and in Paris, I had a chance to socialize with Peggy on various occasions with my wife.
Fast forward a few years, during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Moss shared her version of the story. According to her, from our very first drink, I referred to them as Don and Peggy, and this continued throughout our interaction. Later, she recounted, I emailed her as “Dear Peggy” and signed off with a warm greeting to Don.
He used a cow to campaign for Laura Dern’s Inland Empire Oscar nomination.
Despite its unfortunate failure, Lynch employed an unusual tactic to draw attention to Dern during awards season for Inland Empire: He spent an entire day on Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea in Los Angeles, sitting next to a live cow and a big poster of Dern. As he explained to Wired later, “Usually, people solve problems with money. But I don’t have any.” Instead, he found himself surrounded by a fantastic assortment of individuals. He described it as a breathtakingly beautiful day, spending time with Georgia the cow, listening to lovely piano music, and meeting so many wonderful people.
He did the Ice Bucket Challenge … with iced coffee.
In the scorching summer of 2014, ever the generous soul, Lynch took up the ALS fundraising challenge from both Laura Dern and Justin Theroux. This challenge involved playing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on a trumpet, an act that left him drenched in iced coffee and regular ice water. He then passed the torch to Vladimir Putin, inviting him to carry on this heartwarming tradition.

He was “very, very sweet” when he declined directorial duties for Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Before Cameron Crowe finally chose Amy Heckerling to direct his groundbreaking coming-of-age film, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, he initially considered David Lynch for the job. Lynch was puzzled by this idea because he had been captivated by Lynch’s work in The Elephant Man and Eraserhead. As Crowe recently explained, “He had a very wry smile on his face as I sat talking with him. He read it, we met again. He was very polite about it but seemed slightly confused that we considered him for the job. He said this was a lovely story but ‘It’s not really the kind of thing that I do,’ and he wished me luck. He then got into his white VW bug and drove away.
He spent many years (unofficially) reporting on the weather.
Back in the mid- to late-2000s, if you were one of Lynch’s website subscribers, you would have had the chance to read his occasional weather updates from his home, where he shared his fascination with the “soft golden sun” or the “grayish clouds” that often covered Los Angeles. Unfortunately, he stopped writing these updates, but it seems like the revival of Twin Peaks was demanding his attention.

He used to drink 20 cups of instant coffee a day.
From his teenage years onwards, an enthusiastic coffee drinker, whom we’ll call Lynch, found himself frequently sipping cups of coffee. This habit escalated to consuming a whopping 20 large cups of instant coffee daily in adulthood. However, he has since moderated this intake to approximately seven cups. The influence of coffee on Lynch’s life is so profound that it inspired him to pen an essay for the Huffington Post. In his writing, he described coffee as a key component of what he termed ‘The Art Life.’ He reveled in visiting diners and enjoying coffee, hoping to spark creative ideas. For Lynch, coffee has always been a catalyst for thought processes, enabling him to grasp ideas more easily. Furthermore, he declared that even subpar coffee is preferable to no coffee at all.
He pissed Mattel off with a coffee “commercial.”
Back in 2011, I took a leap into the world of coffee with my authentic and undeniably delicious line, David Lynch Signature Cup. To spread the word about this invigorating brew, I created a humorous video featuring a Barbie doll’s head chattering away in the palm of my hand. However, it seemed Mattel had a different perspective on their product being used to ask questions like “Is it organic?” and make requests such as “Can I have some?” In a polite gesture, they asked me to take down the video from its various online platforms.

He loves eating quinoa so much, he created a surrealist video all about it.
He shared his enthusiasm for enjoying quinoa, saying “I make it a point to include quinoa in my evening meals whenever possible,” before diving into a detailed 20-minute lesson. Follow along, and you’ll not only learn from him but also discover his unique recipe!

He really felt the Bern.
Lynch primarily uses his official Twitter account as a platform to share messages, particularly when promoting his foundation or other charitable initiatives. However, he’s not regularly active on the site. In 2016, he showed exceptional enthusiasm for Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign and shared several tweets expressing his support. As he might say himself, “HOORAY! BERNIE SANDERS FOR PRESIDENT!!!
He is very good at text messaging.
In a playful text conversation with her longtime friend David Lynch, Naomi Watts humorously refers to an imaginary scenario from the show “Twin Peaks: The Return”, pretending to be Janey-E Jones. “I’m Janey-E and I will come when I want to!!!”, she texts. To which Lynch responds with a feigned concern, “Of course, Jeez what was I thinking, please don’t be mad at me… should I go up with Dougie to say goodnight to Sonny Jim?” Watts continues to tease Lynch, demanding his attention during his personal time. Lynch eventually playfully scolds her, saying, “Dear sweet Janey-E. I’m trying to meditate now. I’m sorry darling but this is sort of testing my patience — STOP IT BITCH!!!!”.
