CNN Eyes Moving Wolf Blitzer to Daytime Slot

Wolf Blitzer may be getting ready to storm the morning on CNN.

As a dedicated moviegoer, I find myself excited about potential changes in my go-to news source, CNN. For years, I’ve been tuning into “The Situation Room” during the evening hours since 2005, led by a seasoned anchor. Now, it seems this veteran broadcaster might be shifting the program to a new time slot, perhaps mid-to-late mornings, based on information from someone in the know. These adjustments are part of a larger strategy being contemplated by CNN regarding programming and talent.

A representative from CNN chose not to provide a statement, while it was earlier speculated by the Status newsletter that Blitzer might be shifting to another time slot.

Due to a decline in viewership, CNN has been contemplating strategies that emphasize digital content, causing some employees to worry about the potential changes. It’s widely speculated that layoffs are imminent, as per two sources close to the situation, and adjustments to the programming schedule of CNN’s main cable network may be on the horizon. Additionally, there’s a sense among staff members that CNN might transfer more production workers to their Atlanta offices, a move that could reduce costs related to salaries and real estate in New York City and Washington D.C.

Despite this, CNN hasn’t disclosed any definitive plans yet, and it remains uncertain if the executives have communicated any changes in tasks to their employees or staff members directly.

In simpler terms, Mark Thompson, CEO of CNN, shared with his team that their corporate parent, Warner Bros. Discovery, intends to put $70 million towards implementing Mark’s strategic plan to enhance digital content. The plan includes exploring possibilities for launching new ventures focusing on health, wellness, and other relevant topics, hoping these will capture consumer interest. In a memo sent in July, the executive expressed their intention to create innovative digital products that provide valuable experiences worth paying for.

Wolf Blitzer, who will celebrate his 77th birthday in March, continues to maintain a demanding work schedule, participating in Election Night coverage and anchoring during international crises. He has been with CNN since 1990, and alongside Christiane Amanpour and Anderson Cooper, he forms part of a select few individuals whose extensive tenure at the network lends an air of authority that is challenging for others to replicate in crucial news situations.

A potential plan being discussed involves Blitzer partnering with Pamela Brown, who currently hosts the 11 a.m. segment on the network. If implemented, this show might retain its title “The Situation Room,” and would provide Blitzer an extra hour of airtime, which he has shown interest in. CNN reduced the duration of “The Situation Room” in 2021 to prioritize Jake Tapper’s late-afternoon program, “The Lead.” Other changes are also being considered by CNN at this time.

In the mornings, it would be beneficial to have Blitzer on air because he excels in live-news situations and can thus cover more current events as they unfold, rather than recapping or dissecting them later in the day. This move could also provide an opportunity for another CNN anchor to shine during primetime hours.

Making a change in CNN’s lineup could disrupt their current schedule, where “Situation Room” serves as an alternative to traditional evening news programs like Fox News Channel’s “Special Report.” Such a shift would necessitate assigning a new anchor to this role. Currently, the show is positioned between Jake Tapper’s program and Erin Burnett’s 7 p.m. show, “Outfront,” which marks the beginning of CNN’s evening broadcast.
