ABC News Plans ‘SoCal Strong’ Coverage, Fundraising for California Wildfire Victims

On Friday, I’m proud to be part of the ABC News team as we dedicate a substantial portion of our coverage to assisting those in Los Angeles affected by the recent wildfires. Our “Good Morning America” crew is spearheading an all-day initiative across various programs that will focus on themes of recovery and reconstruction, inspiring viewers to contribute to local organizations that are committed to helping residents rebuild their lives.

The initiative is expected to be announced Thursday during “Good Morning America.”

According to ABC News President Almin Karamehmedovic in an interview, the coverage will kick off with ‘GMA’ and extend right up to ‘World News Tonight.’ From this Friday onwards, Robin Roberts, Michael Strahan, and Ginger Zee will be live from the affected regions to provide updates, offer insight into the tragedy, but most importantly, to solicit funds and draw attention to those who are suffering the most.

The coverage signifies a broadening of the initiatives that are currently being implemented across ABC local stations and on ABC News’ live-streaming news platforms.

Since the past week, ABC News has been focusing intensely on the wildfires, with David Muir, host of “World News Tonight,” and Karamehmedovic, a former producer of the show, reporting live from Los Angeles to anchor the evening broadcast. According to Karamehmedocvic, viewers have shown great interest in these reports, resulting in increased viewership for “World News” and KABC station updates, making it one of their most watched segments in recent months. On January 8th and 14th, “GMA” managed to outperform its main competitor, “Today,” in terms of overall audience.

From ground level, one can truly grasp the magnitude of the disaster,” the official remarks. “This catastrophe is unlike anything we’ve seen before, and it will significantly alter the landscape of southern California for an extended period. The situation is heartbreaking and the events are still evolving.

As I found myself in the bustling heart of Los Angeles last week, despite the solemn occasion of former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral in Washington D.C., I took up the mantle as an anchor, providing coverage from the West Coast. Moreover, I had the privilege of hosting a live primetime special on Friday evening.

Roberts, Strahan, and Zee will also be accompanied by Matt Gutman, a senior correspondent at ABC News, and Kanya Whitworth, who anchors for the ABC News Live streaming platform. They’ve both been reporting on the fires since the previous week.

ABC News Live will persist with “SoCal Strong” coverage throughout the weekend. KABC is scheduled to broadcast a live special called “SoCal Strong,” which highlights remarkable acts of community and residents helping each other out, on Sunday, January 19, at 6:30 p.m., Pacific Standard Time.
