Renowned French artist Patrick Bruel, known for both singing and acting, is one of several Europeans who made their home in the picturesque L.A. district of Pacific Palisades. Sadly, he has now lost his residence due to the destructive wildfire that has been wreaking havoc in the area since last week.
Eight years ago, he purchased the house following the arrival of his sons, Leon (21) and Oscar (19), along with their mother, renowned author and filmmaker Amanda Sthers. Johnny Hallyday, the late French singer, had urged Bruel to buy a home there and be his neighbor. Regrettably, Hallyday’s house, where Laeticia, his widow, lived with their two daughters, has also been destroyed in the fires.
Bruel describes a quaint and charming village where he felt incredibly at ease. It’s tough for him to discuss it in the past because it feels so recent – he was there just five days ago. However, he finds it hard to express how overpowered he felt by the place,” Bruel said to EbMaster. Sadly, today, the prosperous village of Pacific Palisades, including sites like the Will Rogers State Historic Park, has largely been consumed by wildfire.
Yesterday, I had already departed and my son remained behind. He was preparing to fly out to the airport. He questioned me, “Should I head back home? Could I possibly salvage things, is there still a chance?” I responded, “Absolutely not, that’s the last thing on your mind.” What immediately crossed his mind was retrieving his cherished stuffed animals from his childhood. It was something he felt compelled to do.
I find it refreshing when Bruel speaks about his humble abode, contrasting it with the grandiose mansions often depicted in the media. It’s disheartening, really, how the spotlight frequently gravitates towards the opulence of famous individuals’ homes, overlooking the fact that beyond these extravagant facades lie lives filled with families, stories, memories, and things that can’t simply be valued by a price tag.
Primarily, he emphasizes, “There are approximately 300,000 individuals who have been displaced. Many of these individuals stand to lose everything. I’ve learned that certain insurance companies terminated their contracts six months ago out of fear of this risk, leaving some individuals uninsured today.
An image that caught his attention in the news showed a woman sobbing, expressing her concern over explaining to her 3-year-old daughter why she no longer has her beloved teddy bear, why she no longer has any toys, why she can’t go to school anymore, why they no longer have a home, and where they will live or what they will do next.
The image that touched him in the news was of a woman crying, expressing her worry about explaining to her 3-year-old daughter that she’s lost her favorite toy, all her toys, her school, her belongings, her home, and they don’t know where they will go or what they will do next.)
He remarks that for them, it’s quite challenging, as it feels like starting anew. The kids are greatly affected because they haven’t had a chance to bid farewell to their familiar surroundings, their belongings, their family memorabilia such as photos and drawings.
He goes on to say that he had his son Oscar’s beautiful artwork displayed in his room. Unfortunately, their house has since been destroyed by fire, but they continue to “virtually explore” every part of it – every item, every corner, every memory, everything that was a part of their shared history. That house held great significance for them; it served as a beacon, a sanctuary, and one of the places where he truly felt at home.
After seeing pictures of Pacific Palisades post-fire, Bruel describes the scene as “reminding one of an apocalypse” and suggests it appears as if “an explosion had leveled everything.” Yet, he also recognizes that things “could have turned out to be far more devastating.
Bruel notes that if the event occurred during the night, the entire story would have unfolded quite differently.
