The TV series “The Count of Monte Cristo,” directed by Bille August and starring Sam Claflin (“Peaky Blinders”), has been garnering exceptional ratings in Italy. On average, it holds a remarkable 26% share during primetime on the national broadcaster RAI.
The premiere of August’s lavish remake of Alexandre Dumas’ timeless tale, directed by the twice Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker responsible for “Pelle the Conqueror” and “Smilla’s Sense Of Snow,” attracted over 5 million viewers on RAI-1’s main channel this Monday. The show peaked at over 32% of the entire nation’s TV audience, making it RAI’s highest-rated TV series in almost a year.
In the upcoming movie “Monte Cristo” set in August, Edmond Dantes, played by Claflin, is wrongfully accused of treason and jailed without trial at the dismal Château d’If fortress near Marseille. After managing to break free, he embarks on a mission for vengeance. Inside prison walls, Abbé Faria, portrayed by Irons, becomes Dantes’ teacher and guide. The cast of “Monte Cristo” also includes Ana Girardot, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, Blake Ritson, Karla-Simone Spence, Michele Riondino, Lino Guanciale, Gabriella Pession, and Nicolas Maupas.
The premium television series in the English language is manufactured by Palomar, a company under the control of the powerful French conglomerate Mediawan, along with DEMD Productions. This production is a joint effort between France Télévision and RAI. The distribution rights are held by Mediawan Rights.
In partnership with RAI, I took a risk, and I’m thrilled to announce that the outcome has proven to be favorable for us.
He remarked that once more, we were praised for our exceptional storytelling and the effort to adapt timeless literature for television in a way that appeals to a wide audience as a harmonious group performance,” he said.
Degli Esposti emphasized that the “Monte Cristo,” produced in August, is a globally oriented series, masterminded by an Italian producer, boasting a distinguished Danish director. The narrative, he added, maintains utmost reverence for Dumas’ seminal work, and boasts a top-tier ensemble of actors.
The almost 200-year-old Dumas novel is undeniably a valuable intellectual property. The recent three-hour movie adaptation, helmed by French directors Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, featuring Pierre Niney in the lead role and produced by Dimitri Rassam’s Mediawan-owned banner Chapter 2, was a massive hit at the French box office. It garnered almost 10 million admissions and placed second on the local box office charts. In 2024, it became France’s highest-grossing film export.
August’s ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ is the inaugural series wholly created at Mediawan, with Mediawan Rights handling its global representation.
