Study Group, based in Mexico, has secured the rights to transform the popular Australian comedy series “Here Come the Habibs” into a version tailored for Mexican viewers. For this endeavor, they are collaborating with Happy Accidents, a production company located in Los Angeles.
The initial television series, broadcast on Australia’s Channel 9, made history as the first popular commercial TV comedy to star a Middle Eastern family in prominent roles. This fish-out-of-water comedy tells the story of a Lebanese family who become wealthy through a lottery win and subsequently move into an affluent neighborhood. Their new surroundings contrast sharply with the more traditional, reserved neighbors they encounter.
The style originates from Jungle Entertainment, a prolific Australian production company known for hit shows like “Population 11” (Stan), “Wakefield” (ABC), “No Activity,” which has been adapted in more than eight territories, and “Mr Inbetween” (FX).
Stepping into the vibrant streets of Mexico City, this upcoming film remake intends to delve into the complexities of class dynamics, personal identity, and societal assimilation, all through the unique Mexican perspective, offering a fresh take on these universal themes.
