Fox Sports intends to engage fans of its Sunday NFL matches and steer them towards their latest racing shows.
Starting March 2, the inaugural season of IndyCar airs on Fox. To build excitement, Fox Sports plans to show clips of well-known drivers from the sport during their broadcasts of NFL playoff matches and Super Bowl LIX, which is scheduled for February 9 (aired by Fox). Josef Newgarden, a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, is featured in the initial promotional video, along with a brief appearance from Tom Brady, who serves as Fox Sports’ lead NFL analyst.
IndyCar has been with NBC since 2019, previously being under Disney’s wing, but Fox Sports perceives a window of opportunity to attract fresh audiences to the NTT IndyCar Series and the legendary Indianapolis 500. With NASCAR rights in its possession, which includes broadcasting the annual Daytona 500, Fox sees potential in IndyCar as something with growth potential, according to Robert Gottlieb, president of marketing for Fox Sports. They aim to further expand this potential by giving the sport a boost.
As a passionate moviegoer, I find that the NFL games on Fox are some of the most highly-anticipated shows on television. With this in mind, Gottlieb sees an opportunity to appeal to a broader audience while also keeping our dedicated racing enthusiasts engaged. The promos he’s planning will capture the attention of those who tune into sports events and make them aware that there are races coming up on Fox. Yet, he also aims to grab the interest of both IndyCar and NASCAR fans, ensuring that no racing aficionado is left in the dark about these exciting events.
The primary focus for us is the enthusiastic Indy fans. Our aim was to excite them tremendously about the transition to Fox. We wanted them to sense validation for their love and devotion towards it, feeling that Fox truly understands and appreciates this unique property. It’s something fresh and remarkable, they thought.
Fox Sports announced the appointment of seasoned commentator Will Buxton for the play-by-play role, while James Hinchcliffe and Townsend Bell will provide expert analysis on Tuesday.
The goal is also to inform NASCAR enthusiasts, he continues. “We found that if you’re a fan of motor sports like NASCAR, it’s easier for you to become a fan of Indy,” Gottlieb explains. “Our findings and insights about the NASCAR audience showed they weren’t dismissing Indy; instead, they were simply unaware of it and not considering it an option.
