As a dedicated gamer, I’m standing up alongside Gamers Nexus in their commitment to take legal action against Honey. We’re determined to challenge this app and seek compensation from the company due to accusations that they’ve deceived content creators, viewers, and merchants by “scamming” them. Together, we aim to protect our community and uphold fair practices in the gaming world.
In one part of his extended gaming vlog discussing the topic at hand, I, as Gamers Nexus’ lead, Steve Burke, took issue with Linus directly regarding his handling of MegaLag’s allegations.
In simpler terms, MegaLag, the one who initially brought up an issue regarding Honey, accused Linus of knowing about a problem but not speaking openly about it. However, Linus defended himself by stating that others had also reported on this issue, and he was unaware of its alleged impact on consumers as strongly claimed by MegaLag and other critics.
In a strongly worded critique, Burke expressed his disapproval towards Linus’ reaction, labeling it as “extraordinarily disrespectful” and voicing his disappointment over how Linus handled the issue.
Gamers Nexus calls out Linus Tech Tips
As an ardent admirer, I’d like to share my take on a recent video by Gamers Nexus where they explained their legal action against Honey. In the video, they included a segment addressing Linus’ comments, stating that these comments directly contradicted the entire video and the values at GN.
Afterward, he played a short excerpt of Linus’ opinion on the subject. In this clip, the inventor jokingly stated that if he were to create a video about Honey, he would find himself hanging from the closest tree.
Burke asserted, “This is the video we’re producing currently. If it causes the negative response he anticipates, so be it. We believe it’s the right action to take. We won’t shy away from discussing issues that may affect us less significantly due to our current size. It would benefit us, but we’re not going to operate that way here.
It’s incredibly disrespectful towards individuals and small businesses adversely impacted by this situation, who are particularly hard hit. I strongly disagree with LMG Linus’ perspective on the matter. While he is entitled to his viewpoint, we believe it is detrimental to consumers and harmful to upcoming reviewers and consumer advocates. We haven’t forgotten our roots.
This version aims to convey the same message while using simpler language and a more conversational tone.
As a loyal follower, I can’t help but recall instances where Gamers Nexus has shed light on certain aspects of Linus Tech Tips. Their insightful video, which questioned the media empire built by Linus, seems to have instigated a series of internal investigations within the Linus Media Group. These inquiries ultimately led to significant modifications across the company.
Following Linus’ departure from the CEO role, a significant part of the overall changes within the company were initiated as a means to streamline operations and enhance the work environment for employees. This transition took place when he handed over leadership to Terren Tong in May 2023.
Despite temporarily halting production following GN’s video, many of the adjustments that LTT implemented had actually been in progress for several months prior to Burke and company’s video criticizing these changes.
Furthermore, the segment displayed in Gamers Nexus’ Honey video doesn’t cover all that Linus discussed about this subject. A deeper understanding can be gained by watching the full episode of The WAN Show where he sourced the clip from.
Linus Tech Tips’ side of the story
On January 3, 2025, the commencement of the WAN show saw Linus himself admitting humorously, “Last week, I botched this segment, which is typically my style,” before delving further into the subject matter.
He emphasized again that while he suspected Honey might be manipulating his referral connections, he remained unaware of the full impact this had on consumers as well. Furthermore, he acknowledged that producing a video could’ve been beneficial for other creators, but provided reasons behind his decision not to do so.
Looking back, it seems plausible that creating a video three years ago could have helped creators save some money. However, since most of them ceased collaboration around the same time, it’s uncertain whether this is true. What I can confirm is that if we had made that video, the outcome might not have been favorable for us.
Luke interjected to provide further clarification, sharing that they had been conversing with various content creators who were choosing to distance themselves from Honey.
During that period, indeed, we had considered producing a video. We were swamped with links and shares about the topic from other creators. However, the video didn’t receive an overwhelming number of views, nor did it explode in popularity as you might expect. Luke clarified this was due to their perspective that it wasn’t against the users but rather against the creators.
Linus additionally offered an alternative explanation as to why he chose not to create the video, and potential outcomes if he had done so.
Consider this: Suppose I created a video asking our viewers to remove an extension called Honey, claiming it gives them better deals but I wasn’t earning enough revenue from it. Now, genuinely reflect – would such a recommendation have been beneficial for me? In all honesty, do you believe that would have turned out favorably for my interests?” he inquired.
This dialogue led to the short clip that was used in the Gamers Nexus video.
In other words, even though LTT’s viewers have varying opinions on the subject, it can’t be disputed that creating a video about Honey after MegaLag’s documentary was released and making one well before all this information surfaced places these content creators in significantly distinct scenarios.
