1923 Season 2 still needs to confirm one non-Dutton family connection

1923 Season 2 is nearly upon us, wrapping up the Dutton era for now, yet a different, lineage-focused enigma lurks and requires resolution.

In Season 2, there’s a lot left to complete before Taylor Sheridan shifts his focus towards projects like 1944 and The Madison. A significant point of curiosity is the identity of John Dutton’s grandparents – could they be Spencer and Alexandra or Jack and Elizabeth?

Despite the actors being secretive about it, it’s uncertain who among them will carry on the family lineage in the future.

In an unusual twist, only a franchise as fixated on legacy as Sheridan’s could spark such interest over a minor familial discrepancy in the family tree. However, if we shift our focus from the Dutton clan, there remains another potential link to his original series that has yet to be substantiated.

Thomas Rainwater has an ancestor in 1923

Beyond the Duttons, a notable figure who features in both 1923 and Yellowstone is Rainwater. In Yellowstone, Thomas Rainwater serves as the Chief of the Broken Rock Reservation, while also owning lucrative casinos in the region.

Initially, Rainwater opposes John Dutton and aims to reclaim the land for his tribe. However, as tensions escalate between them, a grudging respect forms between John and Thomas. By the finale of the series, their bond deepens according to the Dutton prophecy, ultimately resulting in Rainwater acquiring the ranch. Put simply, the ranch eventually belongs to Rainwater.

In 1923, another Rainwater is involved: Teonna. Unfortunately, her tale is much more heart-wrenching. At the onset of the prequel, she finds herself confined within an American Indian boarding school. There, she experiences cruelty at the hands of nuns and is compelled to abandon her language. This harrowing situation mirrors a grim truth from history.

However, she manages to elude capture, and as Season 1 comes to a close, she’s fugitive, seeking her father. Consequently, it’s evident that the two Rainwaters share a familial bond, yet viewers are left pondering: by what means?

The prequel series hasn’t definitively established her as a direct descendant of Thomas, but most viewers believe she is his grandmother. This idea, however, contradicts a widely held belief that Teonna won’t make it past Season 2.

It’s unlikely that Thomas Rainwater is older than John, as depicted in the primary storyline. So, if Teonna didn’t have him when she was in her fifties or sixties, it seems she might be his grandmother instead.

Another commented, ‘That seems more plausible.’ Although we can’t definitively say when Thomas was born, it’s hard for me to believe he’d be that old. This is particularly doubtful if Teonna really passes away in 1923 or 1924 (I personally don’t think she’ll die in Season 2, but let’s save that discussion for another time).

A user pointed out, “If Teonna were to die in an episode of 1923, it would imply that she had already given birth to Rainwater beforehand. Given the show’s title, this would mean Rainwater was born in the year 1923, which would make him 101 years old in the final season of Yellowstone – an age I don’t believe he has reached!
