Kamal Haasan, Ajith Kumar Lead Netflix’s Power-Packed South Indian Slate for 2025

Netflix has made a significant investment in the realm of South Indian cinema, announcing an extensive plan for Tamil and Telugu movies that boast stars like Kamal Haasan, Ajith Kumar, Suriya, Vijay Deverakonda, and Pawan Kalyan.

During the significant celebrations of Pongal and Sankranti, the popular streaming service revealed its upcoming collection. This assortment includes a variety of action movies, suspenseful thrillers, and dramatic pieces which will first be shown in cinemas before becoming available on the streaming platform.

This Tamil movie lineup consists of nine productions: “Thug Life,” directed by Mani Ratnam, with Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan and Pankaj Tripathi in the lead; Ajith Kumar’s dual releases “Good Bad Ugly” and “VidaaMuyarchi,” both co-starring Trisha Krishnan; “Retro,” starring Suriya and Pooja Hegde; “Bison,” featuring Dhruv Vikram and Anupama Parameswaran; “Dragon,” headlined by Pradeep Ranganathan; “Kaantha” with Dulquer Salmaan and Bhagyashri Borse; “Perusu,” starring Vaibhav and social media sensation Niharika NM; and a yet-to-be-titled project from Pradeep Ranganathan and Keerthiswaran, featuring Mamitha Baiju.

This Telugu lineup features nine significant films: “OG” featuring Pawan Kalyan alongside Emraan Hashmi, “VD12” starring Vijay Deverakonda, “Hit 3 – The Third Case” with Nani, “Thandel” starring Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi, “Mass Jathara” headlined by Ravi Teja, “Anaganaga Oka Raju” with Naveen Polishetty, “Court: State vs A Nobody” starring Priyadarshi, “Jack” starring Siddhu Jonnalagadda, and “Mad Square” featuring Sangeeth Shoban.

2024 stood out as a particularly memorable year for Netflix India, according to Monika Shergill, Vice President of content at Netflix India, due to Tamil movies captivating audiences globally like no other time before. Movies such as ‘Amaran,’ ‘GOAT,’ ‘Maharaja,’ and ‘Meiyazhagan’ demonstrated the universal allure of genuine storytelling. The year 2025 promises even greater excitement.

Concerning Telugu productions, Shergill noted that 2024 was an exceptional year for Netflix India, as our Telugu films captivated audiences more than ever before. Blockbusters such as ‘Devara,’ ‘Guntur Kaaram,’ ‘Hi Nanna,’ ‘Lucky Baskhar,’ ‘Salaar’ and ‘Saripodhaa Sanivaaram’ gained global popularity, frequently appearing on watchlists, trending on social media, and receiving praise from both fans and critics. As we move into 2025, anticipation for more exciting content only grows.

The ongoing purchase by Netflix of South Indian movies in cinemas indicates a popular pattern at India’s box office. By 2024, Southern films represented six out of the ten highest-grossing movies in the country, taking the top two spots and controlling about 45% of the market share.
