A seventeen-year-old has ingeniously developed a device to deceive during chess matches by hacking Ray-Ban Meta eyewear to display optimal moves in real-time for off-board competitions.
Discussing the topic of cheating in chess games, it’s fair to say that this issue has sparked debates for quite some time now, as numerous competitors have faced allegations of employing questionable methods to gain an advantage against their rivals.
Although cheating during traditional in-person competitions is less common and more challenging compared to online games, a resourceful student from Columbia University, named Eddy Xu, has developed an exceptional device designed for cheating.
In a popular post on X, the student publicly unveiled his secret modification of his Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which employ artificial intelligence to subtly display optimal moves to him, keeping his opponents in the dark.
AI glasses give cheaters the best chess moves
Eddy’s post gained momentum swiftly, featuring numerous images demonstrating the glasses at work and highlighting their ability to spot outstanding dance moves.
He mentioned creating AI chess eyewear, enabling players to make flawless engine moves undetected by their opponents.

In his subsequent update, he demonstrated how his glasses worked by broadcasting the chess game onto Instagram, reflecting the stream onto his computer, then using the Stockfish chess engine to process the information, ultimately receiving the results as text.
As stated by Xu, the glasses were produced during TeenHacks Long Island, a 24-hour high school hackathon that is the sole active event of its kind on Long Island.
The chess community expressed a mix of awe and apprehension regarding this new technology. Chess.com initially showed surprise by exclaiming, “Oh dear,” followed by admiration: “Wow, this is incredibly impressive, outstanding job.
this is INSANELY cool, amazing work

Veteran chess player Vladimir Kramnik, known for his strong stance against cheating, swiftly proposed the development of a fresh anti-cheating mechanism to preserve the integrity of the game following the sight of the glasses in question.
To ensure the integrity of chess, we need to create a robust anti-cheating system for the next generation. My talented team and I are already working on it, but any additional assistance would be greatly appreciated.
With both @chesscom and @FIDE_chess firmly rejecting the issue, it appears we’re at a critical juncture for chess. The only solution left seems to be the creation of a robust anti-cheating system by my dedicated team of experts. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It’s quite obvious that sporting glasses in a face-to-face competition might raise suspicions, but the chess community is known for its penchant for speculating about cheating incidents, like the time Hans Niemann was suspected of concealing a device within his person to relay moves and defeat Magnus Carlsen.
It’s not only deceit in chess that involves using a computer to find optimal moves; it can also involve unsportsmanlike actions like what happened last year with a Russian player at the Dagestan Chess Championship. She was spotted on camera seemingly contaminating her opponent’s pieces before their match, which is clearly against the rules.
