Ainsley star defends “stupid” scene in Landman Episode 10

In Episode 10, it appears that Landman’s storyline may have concluded, but the club scene continues to spark conversations among viewers. Notably, Michelle Randolph, who portrays Ainsley, has offered a hopeful interpretation of the narrative development. (Be aware: spoilers follow!)

In the final episode of The Landman’s first season, there were many unexpected events. Monty passed away, Tommy was brutally tormented by the cartel, and Cooper expanded his influence in the oil business. However, what made things even more intriguing was that Ainsley and Angela finally put their grand scheme into action.

The proposed action involved treating some elderly residents from a retirement home to an outing at a nightclub featuring adult entertainment. Remarkably, Ainsley managed to persuade her latest companion, Ryder, to entertain one of the attendees, resulting in his mortification and near-nudity while the seniors rejoiced over their renewed vitality.

Without further explanation, it’s clear that the situation was highly divisive. Given the criticism over the portrayal of underage character Ainsley and her relationships being overly sexualized, the strip club scene felt awkward and uncomfortable to many viewers. Yet, Randolph holds a contrasting viewpoint.

Michelle Randolph says Landman strip club scene was “special”

At first, viewers showed strong reactions to that particular scene, labeling it as excessively sexual and seemingly out of character.

In simpler terms, one Reddit user expressed their discomfort by saying, “Ainsley’s behavior is awkward and her exploitation of the character is disturbing. Given that they are both supposed to be 17 years old, it seems inappropriate for him to be performing a striptease at a strip club. She shouldn’t even be allowed there!

“If there’s a second season, the series should undergo some changes,” one person concurred. “It ought to focus more on Tommy and his son instead. Eliminating the nursing home and strip club narratives would be ideal. They are simply not engaging.” Another individual expressed their disapproval more bluntly, referring to it as “an uninteresting storyline.

However, Randolph’s reaction to the scene was entirely different upon first reading the script.

She shared with Deadline that she hadn’t anticipated it at all, but it turned out to be an exceptionally unique narrative. I believe it provides their characters with a meaningful objective within Midland, demonstrating that they have layers beyond what viewers might first assume.

“I love that Angela is so obsessed with her old folks,” she added. “It’s her passion now.”

Additionally, it turned out that the setting afforded Randolph an opportunity to interact with Taylor Sheridan’s real-life spouse, who happens to be a volunteer at the same facility where he was working.

Did you know this? Taylor’s spouse often helps out at the nursing home where we filmed. I joined her one time and we played games together. It was quite an interesting experience, getting a taste of that environment prior to shooting those specific scenes,” she mentioned.
