In 2021, Lucy Liu grabbed attention when she discussed an issue from the “Charlie’s Angels” set on the Los Angeles Times’ “Asian Enough” podcast. She claimed that Bill Murray had made offensive and unjustifiable remarks towards her during filming. Recently, The Guardian asked Murray about his decision to publicly address these allegations four years later. They both worked together with Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore on “Charlie’s Angels” in 1999, with the movie premiering the following year.
Liu remarked that he hadn’t given it much thought before speaking up. In any circumstance, he would have done the same. When something seems wrong to him, he feels compelled to protect himself. It’s a natural instinct to do so when you sense injustice, and he always feels this way.

Liu admitted that he hadn’t given speaking out much thought. He would have acted the same way in any situation. Whenever he senses something is amiss, he feels the need to protect himself. It’s a reflexive action when you sense an injustice, and he always has this feeling.

Liu confessed that speaking out hadn’t crossed his mind much. Regardless of the situation, he would have reacted similarly. If something feels off to him, he feels driven to safeguard himself. It’s a built-in response when you sense an unfairness, and he is always attuned to this feeling.
Liu openly admitted that she’s not the type to keep quiet and play the conventional Hollywood game, stating: “If I had been, my journey would have been smoother. But since I’ve never been like that, we needed to find a solution. There’s never been an easy path for me or other Asian American actors – I truly believe it’s a collective effort. I wouldn’t claim all the credit. My career hasn’t been built solely by myself.
Liu stated that she managed to steer clear of potentially hazardous situations during her acting career in Hollywood during the 1990s, mainly because she was “cognizant that certain circumstances weren’t safe” and decided to stay away from them. She believes that her ability to listen to her intuition saved her from numerous questionable scenarios, which may have involved exploitation or what others would term as quid pro quo. In simpler terms, everyone has an inner voice, but not everyone pays attention to it; however, Liu was always able to heed and respond to hers.
During a 2021 conversation on the “Asian Enough” podcast, Liu recounted an instance where Murray allegedly hurled offensive remarks towards her while they were working together.
Liu reminisced, “He just wouldn’t stop, and it felt endless.” Feeling baffled, she exclaimed, “This is surprising! He appears to be staring right at me. I can’t fathom why, as I wasn’t involved in anything significant back then.” She even glanced around, wondering who he might be addressing, saying, “I must have misunderstood, right? Are you speaking to me?” It turned out that he was indeed speaking to her, and from then on, our conversation became a private exchange.
She asserted, “Certain parts of what was said were intolerable and inappropriate, and I wasn’t going to remain silent about it. Therefore, yes, I chose to defend myself, and I have no regrets. Regardless of one’s position or background, there’s no excuse for belittling others or treating them unfairly. I wouldn’t back down then, and I shouldn’t have had to.
Following the widespread popularity of the podcast interview, Barrymore publicly commended Liu on her daytime talk show. She noted that “comedians might occasionally have a somber outlook,” and Murray displayed a grumpy demeanor during filming for “Charlie’s Angels.
Barrymore shared that a remarkable outcome from a difficult situation was how assertively Lucy stood up for herself. He explained, “Lucy flatly refused to tolerate such behavior from the person involved, stating clearly, ‘I will not accept this kind of treatment.’ We all rallied behind her and reinforced her stance, allowing us to proceed together.
In the workplace, it’s crucial that we value and respect one another. If you ever feel disrespected, don’t hesitate to express yourself and find support from others who will stand by your side and affirm, “I support this person.” I admired her then, and I still do now. I am proud of our team and our company for addressing such issues directly rather than treading lightly. We handled it promptly, showed strength, and moved forward without compromising our standards, ensuring we never settle for anything less in the future.
Liu’s comments from 2021 re-emerged about a year later, leading Searchlight Pictures to halt production on Aziz Ansari’s first feature film as director in April 2022 due to allegations of Murray’s inappropriate conduct on set. Regrettably, the project never resumed production. Later, Geena Davis disclosed in her memoir published a few months afterward, titled “Dying of Politeness,” that during the filming of their 1990 crime comedy “Quick Change,” Murray was accused of harassing her. Davis stated that Murray attempted to use a massage device on her in a hotel room and subsequently criticized her on set.
