Box Office: ‘Mufasa’ Crosses $500 Million Globally, ‘Moana 2’ Nears $1 Billion Mark

Two significant Disney releases, “The Lion King’s Mufasa” and “Moana 2,” have reached notable box office landmarks.

In just four weeks since its release, “Mufasa” has swum beyond the $500 million milestone worldwide, whereas “Moana 2” is preparing to dive past the $1 billion mark as its current box office earnings stand at an impressive $989.9 million.

Over the weekend, “The Lion King” prequel once again ruled the global box office with a gross of $41 million, earning an additional $27.9 million from 52 international markets. After a slow start during the holidays, this photorealistic musical journey about the future ruler of Pride Lands has made a comeback, generating $540 million in total revenue so far. Excluding North America, where it has earned $189 million, the top-grossing countries are France ($33.7 million), the UK ($29.9 million), Mexico ($24.6 million), and Germany ($24 million). With a production cost exceeding $200 million, Disney is counting on “Mufasa” to keep packing theaters to cover its hefty budget.

Opening ahead of Thanksgiving, ‘Moana 2’ earned $11.1 million internationally and $17.6 million worldwide during the weekend. Originally designed for streaming, this animated sequel was later moved to cinemas and is expected to become Disney’s third 2024 release to enter the billion-dollar club alongside ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ With such impressive box office numbers, it seems that a third Moana adventure might not be too far in the future.”

(Note: The phrase “eventually be Disney’s third 2024 release to join the billion-dollar club” has been rephrased as “expected to become Disney’s third 2024 release to enter the billion-dollar club.”)

In other countries, the movie “Nosferatu” earned $13.7 million internationally and a total of $20.5 million worldwide during the weekend. This modern take on “Dracula,” featuring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok alongside Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult, has raked in $53 million overseas and an impressive $135 million globally so far.

Simultaneously, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount earned approximately $20.3 million in 62 international markets and an additional $31.3 million globally over the weekend. The third animated installment debuted in China, but unfortunately performed poorly with earnings of just $1.8 million. Fortunately, Sonic has been a success almost everywhere else, raking in a total of $384 million after four weekends since its release.
