Cinematographer Roger Pratt, who worked on films such as “The Fisher King,” “Brazil,” and Tim Burton’s “Batman,” passed away at the age of 77.
The British Society of Cinematographers announced the unfortunate demise of Roger Pratt BSC (1947-2024), without specifying the exact date or the reason behind his passing.
In 1999, I was honored with an Academy Award nomination for my contributions to “The End of the Affair.” Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Terry Gilliam. Together, we brought life to projects such as “Brazil,” “The Fisher King,” and “12 Monkeys.
Richard Attenborough also contributed to the project. Pratt was involved with the film “Shadowlands,” which received the BAFTA award for Best British Movie.
Apart from that, he was involved in the production of the “Harry Potter” series, specifically in the movies “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” and “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Pratt hails from Leicester, a county in Britain, and was born in 1947. During the 1960s, he chose to study at the London Film School.
For his initial profession, Pratt found employment at Chippenham Films located in the U.K. During this time, he functioned as a clapper loader where he encountered Gilliam. As per the British Society of Cinematographers, Gilliam recounts their first meeting. In the process of filming the Bridge of Death sequence, they required a striking shot looking up at the bridge with the distant mountains. Gilliam positioned the camera on the edge of the cliff, but the lens wasn’t expansive enough. They were far from the road, the light was waning, and the situation seemed dire. This man said, “Give me a moment,” and within a few minutes, while we were still figuring things out, he had sprinted down the mountain, crossed the river, climbed up the other side, reached the camera truck, grabbed the appropriate lens, returned with it, and voila! We attached it to the camera, capturing the shot. That instance was when I fell in love with Roger.
In 2023, Pratt received the British Society of Cinematographers’ Lifetime Achievement Award.
