Nintendo Switch 2 console reveal was based on leaks and not real system

At this year’s 2025 Consumer Electronics Show, I got a sneak peek at what appeared to be a prototype of the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2. However, it seems that this design was actually based on leaked information rather than any official designs created by Nintendo themselves.

On the 8th of January, a supposed prototype of the Nintendo Switch 2, equipped with Joy-Cons, surfaced on Twitter/X. This sneak peek was shared by Genki, a third-party accessory manufacturer who labeled it as mockups. As reported by Numerama, these Genki reps claimed that the Switch 2 is slated for release in April and that they’re not breaching any agreements by unveiling this early. In other words, it seems like we might be getting our hands on the Nintendo Switch 2 sooner than we thought!

Nintendo clarified that the design of the Switch 2 depicted is not derived from any officially released details. Representatives from Genki stated to Game*Spark that the mockup was constructed using leaked data, rather than representing a genuine console design.

The Genki Nintendo Switch 2 was based on leaks

To start off, it’s important to note that due to the languages involved – Numerama being French and Game*Spark being Japanese – there may have been some language barriers leading to potential misunderstandings throughout the process. It’s quite possible that what occurred was merely a big mix-up.

It’s quite daring to exhibit merchandise at a trade fair using images and papers that might just be rumors or unverified information.

Given the limited knowledge we have about the next Nintendo Switch model, there’s a good chance much of the leaked information circulating so far is incorrect or relies on old data. As a result, devices designed to be compatible with this potential system may not function as intended.

The anticipation for news about the Nintendo Switch 2 lingers on. Fans will have to wait until the conclusion of the fiscal year, which falls at the end of March, to see if Nintendo will meet its own deadline and unveil their next gaming system.

There’s a good chance that the leaks might have been correct, suggesting that the Genki model is built around an authentic Nintendo Switch 2 prototype. Nevertheless, the CES 2025 unveiling has taken a hit in terms of credibility, and the hardware demonstrated could be just a shell made of plastic.
