In December 2024, Twitch experienced its least-watched month since July 2020; however, surprisingly, there was an uptick in streaming activities on the platform during that period.
In simpler terms, by the end of 2024, Twitch has become one of the most popular live streaming services on the internet, attracting many well-known content creators who were previously with platforms such as YouTube and Kick.
Despite notable figures such as Valkyrae, Ludwig, and others rejoining Twitch towards the end of 2024, December saw the platform recording its least-watched month in the past four years.
Twitch sees lowest views since July 2020
According to StreamsCharts, the total viewing hours on Twitch for that particular month were approximately 1.58 billion, marking an 11% drop compared to previous watch times. This is the first instance since July 2020 that viewership has dipped this low.
Despite the typical decrease in activity on Twitch during December, possibly due to the holiday season, an unexpected surge occurred towards the end of 2024. This growth was evident in both the overall count of streamers and the number of concurrent broadcasts running simultaneously.
Last month, I noticed an impressive surge in the diversity of content from the streamers I follow on Twitch, with a record-breaking 43,200 distinct categories streamed – the highest since March!
Typically, the “Just Chatting” category led the pack in viewership with approximately 1.5 million views, trailed closely by “Grand Theft Auto V,” “Path of Exile,” and “Fortnite” with around 99 million, 69 million, and 68 million monthly views respectively.
Japanese streamers lead the way on Twitch
Apart from the key points from December 2024, it’s worth noting that the popular channels showcased a diverse mix of global locations. The top spot was held by shaka_FPS, a Japanese streamer, who clocked an impressive 305 hours of view time.
Indeed, four popular Twitch streamers from Japan managed to secure spots within the top 10 most-watched channels for that particular month. Among them were Junichi Kato, darumaisgod, and RTAinJapan.
In a recent ranking update, Australian live-streamer Quin69 and German content creator ellasn97 were included among those who made the list. Meanwhile, American streaming giant Kai Cenat experienced a decrease in viewership, resulting in third place overall, following the impressive success of his Mafiathon 2 stream in November 2024.
Although December has been the least-watched month on Twitch since 2020, there’s been a significant surge in platform activity. Streamers worldwide are now grabbing the spotlight as popular games such as Marvel Rivals dominate the scene on Twitch.
