In today’s world, no studio lets valuable intellectual properties (IP) go unused, and if the endless reincarnations of Shrek are any indication, Shrek is a highly profitable IP. Therefore, it’s only logical that they would exploit this, as they plan to do with two upcoming films – one officially announced and the other hinted at by Eddie Murphy himself. Here’s what we know so far about the continuation of the Shrek franchise.

When’s it coming?

It’s confirmed that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will reprise their roles in “Shrek 5”, as Eddie Murphy himself revealed on June 24 that he’s been recording the voices for this upcoming movie, a process that started several months prior. Originally planned to hit cinemas on July 1, 2026 as a ‘Hot Ogre Summer’, Universal Pictures has now shifted the release date of “Shrek 5” to December 23, 2026. So, get ready for a festive “Shrek” experience!

But wait, there’s more?

Absolutely! Murphy has shared that he will voice Donkey in an upcoming Donkey spinoff movie, which hasn’t started recording yet, according to Collider. If given free rein, we imagine this film would feature Donkey and Dragon hosting a dinner party, reminiscent of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Perhaps Gingy and Pinocchio could be the young couple, bringing some Shrek-like charm to the table.

Is there any plan to adapt Shrek: The Musical?

As far as we’re aware, it doesn’t exist yet, but it definitely ought to. For now, keep playing “Who I’d Be” and let the tears flow.
