Film production company Bac Films has acquired the rights for Helene Merlin’s first feature film, “Cassandre.” Bac Films plans to kick off global distribution of this film during the upcoming Unifrance Rendez-Vous event in Paris next week.
The summer of 1998, nestled in a peaceful countryside setting, unfolds the tale of a coming-of-age drama. In this story, emerging talent Billie Blain (“The Animal Kingdom”) shares the screen with veteran actress Zabou Breitman (“The New Look”). This narrative focuses on an adolescent girl who embarks on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth following puberty.
In their modest country estate, Cassandre’s parents and elder sibling observe that her physical appearance has evolved. Thankfully, Cassandre is an ardent equestrian, so she decides to spend the holidays at a quaint riding center where she becomes fondly accepted as a peculiar yet lovable individual. It is here that she unearths a fresh sense of ‘normal’, one that gradually liberates her from the family dynamics that were suffocating her…”

Vincent Llobell of Bac Films expresses his excitement about working on Hélène Merlin’s first film. He was immediately drawn to the script and the completed project only reinforced his initial feelings. Working on a debut film is always a mix of challenge and privilege, and in this case, it proved to be a successful venture. Llobell hopes that this collaboration will lead to a lasting relationship with the filmmaker due to its impressive outcome.
With this recent purchase, our sales company is gearing up for a more vigorous phase. Previously, we had been targeting four to five acquisitions annually since the pandemic. Now, Bac Films intends to nearly double that rate. In the upcoming month, we will debut two films at the European Film Market in Berlin and plan to acquire two additional ones. Furthermore, we’re planning to attend Cannes with a similar objective.
I’ve been observing a change in our company’s acquisition strategy,” I note. “Instead of a more contained approach, we’re moving towards a bolder one. Specifically, Bac Films is aiming to acquire initial or second films and support emerging artists as they make their mark in the arthouse market.
Over the next few years, our aim is to release between seven and eight films annually, all while staying true to our philosophy of uncovering fresh French and international art-house filmmakers. Essentially, we’re actively seeking numerous projects, particularly those that nurture emerging talent – much like Hélène Merlin did.
