The Paris-based company Playtime, known for sales, production, and equity investment, has acquired the rights to “Chopin, A Sonata in Paris,” an ambitious biopic about the renowned Polish composer and pianist Frédéric Chopin. This project comes from Akson Studio, one of Poland’s leading production houses, who are also behind productions such as “Katyń” and “Warsaw 44.
The upcoming film, budgeted at $17.5 million, brings back producer-director Michał Kwieciński and the rising Polish actor Eryk Kulm (known for “Filip”), who will portray Chopin. Lambert Wilson, best known for his role in “The Matrix Resurrections,” is cast as King Louis Philippe in this production.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but be captivated by “Chopin, A Sonata in Paris,” a movie that exudes an elegant, baroque charm. The visual magic is masterfully crafted by Michał Sobociński, the cinematographer behind the AppleTV+ series “The New Look.” Katarzyna Sobańska, the talented producer-designer whose portfolio boasts credits in the Oscar-nominated film “Cold War,” also plays a significant role in its creation.
Written by Bartosz Janiszewski (“Wataha”), this movie follows the story of a daring, young pianist named Chopin who departed from Poland at the age of 21 and ventured to Paris. In Paris, he utilized music’s power more effectively than anyone else. The synopsis describes him as the pulsating life force of the city during its decadent evenings. However, when his health deteriorates and illness takes hold, he realizes that his days are limited. Time becomes his enemy, and composing music becomes his sole obsession. With each tick of the clock, he strives to transform the very nature of music itself.
According to Nicolas Brigaud-Robert, Co-CEO of Playtime, Chopin is not only renowned as one of the world’s greatest pianists and composers in history, but he was an extraordinary individual, larger than life in many aspects, even surpassing the dimensions of fiction.
Michal Kwiecinski’s movie immerses us not only into the intricate thoughts of musical geniuses, but also the bustling atmosphere of 1830s Paris. The film is visually breathtaking and captivating in its storytelling,” Brigaud-Robert explained further. “Upon our first glimpse of this grand production, it instantly won our hearts at Playtime,” he added.
Ever since we embarked on this cinematic journey, I’ve been keeping a keen eye on the global movie scene. That’s why securing a seasoned sales agent and business partner, well-versed in handling film distributors, streaming platforms, and broadcasters from across the globe, was crucial for us. With Playtime’s impressive history at Cannes, Venice, and Berlin, I’m optimistic that our post-production masterpiece will make its way into some of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.
The filmmaker was equally excited to have Playtime, a French production company, represent the movie. Given that France had a significant impact on Chopin’s life and served as the location for much of our filming, with approximately 80% of the dialogues being in French, this partnership seemed particularly fitting.
In 2025, I’ll have the pleasure of witnessing the release of a captivating film titled “Chopin, A Sonata in Paris,” produced by Galapagos Films. This studio has recently graced our screens with enchanting productions such as “Marcello Mio,” “Rosalie,” and “The Dead Don’t Hurt.” I can hardly wait!
