Andy Muschietti finally updates fans on his Shadow of the Colossus film

Despite Wander’s skill at defeating colossal foes in the PS2 game Shadow of the Colossus, he’s yet to triumph over the challenge of adapting it into a movie. However, it seems that victory might be on the horizon at last.

Since as early as 2009, there had been plans to turn this visually stunning game into a film. However, the project faced some difficulties until director Andy Muschietti joined in 2014. During his tenure, he handled numerous projects such as It, The Flash, and an upcoming DCU project titled The Brave and the Bold, causing the movie adaptation to encounter challenges again.

Back in January 2025, I had the thrill of hearing from Muschietti himself that the long-awaited adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus is now officially scheduled! Fingers crossed, but it seems like this time, we’re really going to see it come to life!

A hopeful update after a colossal wait

During an interview with Radio TU (conducted through Reconnectados), the director discussed both the game’s enduring popularity and its long-awaited adaptation. The director expressed, “I don’t consider myself a heavy gamer, but Shadow of the Colossus appears to me as a masterpiece, and I have played it multiple times.

He added, “The movie has been under preparation for a decade, and now, it seems we may finally bring it to life.” Emphasizing that this wasn’t a project left untouched or forgotten.

Shadow of the Colossus movie hinges on one important thing

As a gamer, I’ve found a script that truly resonates with me, but there are elements beyond our shared passion for gaming that come into play. The popularity of such an esteemed intellectual property is one of them.

The hope, he explains, is that his ambition for the project is met by audience demand:

Shadow of the Colossus is a well-loved video game, and some studios have proposed budgets, ranging from $200 million to $100 million, for a potential film adaptation. As a director, I’d naturally prefer a $200 million budget, but it’s essential to consider that the final decision may depend on various factors.

As the popularity of movie adaptations from video games grows, fueled by acclaimed projects such as The Last of Us and Fallout, it’s now possible that Muschietti’s vision for the film could be realized at last.
