In an interview with MovieWeb, I, James Mangold, shared that my upcoming “Star Wars” project, which received a Directors Guild of America nomination for “A Complete Unknown,” is intentionally set far in the past compared to other films in the franchise. This strategic decision allows me to navigate the established canon without causing any potential upset among dedicated fans, as my film will be released in an era untouched by previous movies, officially announced in April 2023.
The director shared with MovieWeb that the new ‘Star Wars’ movie is set 25,000 years before existing ones. This period has long intrigued him, as it was a world he admired even as a teenager. At this stage, he’s not overly concerned about being bound by too much established lore, finding it nearly impossible to satisfy everyone.
Last year, Mangold shared with io9 following the disclosure of his role in a “Star Wars” film, that his project would primarily focus on the origins of the Force and its manipulation, control, and comprehension. He likened this concept to religious epics like “The Ten Commandments,” suggesting a comparable tone. At that time, he expressed his intention to avoid overwhelming the narrative with excessive lore.
Regarding Mangold’s “Star Wars” movie, Lucasfilm has yet to offer any fresh news aside from his role as the director. It is worth noting that Mangold is a strong contender for an Oscar this year due to his work directing the Bob Dylan biographical drama. However, he is no novice when it comes to big Hollywood franchises, having previously directed “The Wolverine,” “Logan,” and the upcoming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
In 2023, Mangold conversed with EbMaster before the launch of the fifth Indiana Jones film, and he openly expressed his disinterest in creating spinoffs from the movie. He argued that when there’s too much backstory, Easter eggs, and fan service, it goes against the essence of storytelling, transforming it into large-scale advertising instead.
Last year, during an interview with Rolling Stone, director Mangold expressed his reluctance to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to its heavy reliance on storyline history and established rules (lore and canon) at this point in time.
Mangold expressed that it’s surprising he’s worked in IP entertainment, as he isn’t fond of creating multi-movie universes. He considers it a hindrance to storytelling; in fact, he views it as the demise of storytelling. Mangold finds it more captivating to observe how Lego pieces fit together rather than focusing on the narrative itself.”
Or, more concisely:
“Mangold has admitted he finds multi-movie universe-building strange given his role in IP entertainment, as he believes it stifles storytelling and is less engaging than observing how Legos connect.
In my opinion, the aim I consistently strive for is, “What sets this film and its characters apart from others?” as Mangold explained. This isn’t about making you compare it to another movie or hunt for hidden references, which are more intellectual exercises rather than evoking genuine emotions. Instead, I aim for the movie to resonate with viewers on an emotional level.
Mangold’s “Star Wars” movie does not yet have a release date.
