If you haven’t had a chance to watch The Brutalist… you’re in good company. The film has been given a restricted release by A24, which means that it might be hard for you to find if you’re eager to see it. However, don’t worry, it will eventually become available on one streaming platform.

Here comes the predicament during award seasons: All of a sudden, numerous new films catch your eye, but unfortunately, with their nominations, finding a chance to watch them becomes quite elusive.

Example: Fernanda Torres recently received a Golden Globe award for her role in the film “I’m Still Here,” which initially screened in select theaters for a week back in November. As of now, it has not yet had a nationwide release in the United States (or anywhere else outside of Brazil).

This year, “The Brutalist” appears to be the strong contender for Best Picture, but there’s a possibility that either “Wicked” or “Emilia Pérez” might disrupt this position. However, at the moment, you may not have the opportunity to watch it… just yet.

How to watch The Brutalist

Currently, “The Brutalist” is playing in movie theaters throughout the United States. Starting from January 24, 2025, it will also be shown in cinemas across the UK.

While it’s not certain that you’ll find it at your neighborhood theater, if there’s an IMAX screen nearby, you’re in for a treat! It’s currently showing on IMAX screens all throughout January. If, however, you don’t have an IMAX close by, you might need to travel a bit (either a short or longer distance) to catch it on the big screen.

The film will be showing in theaters throughout Europe and Australia towards the end of January as well, meaning it’s not far off, so keep an eye out!

Where to stream The Brutalist

To watch “The Brutalist,” you’ll have to be patient as it hasn’t arrived on the streaming service Max yet. Since it’s provided by A24, it’s likely that it will eventually become available for streaming on HBO.

2023 saw A24 signing a long-term agreement with Warner Bros Discovery. This means that A24 films will become available on Max after their initial theater run, which usually lasts about 18 months as part of the pay-one window.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch any of the latest films from A24, such as “A Better Man” featuring Sebastian Stan, and are interested, you might want to think about subscribing. The monthly cost is $16.99 without advertisements or $9.99 with them.

In a previous statement, Royce Battleman, Executive Vice President of Content Acquisitions at Warner Bros. Discovery, mentioned that extending our partnership with A24 to offer award-winning films and popular fan favorites to our subscribers significantly strengthens the value proposition of HBO and Max.

Partnering with A24 is significant because it gives us access to a wide variety of compelling narratives they produce.

Here’s my take: I can’t tell you exactly when “The Brutalist” will show up on Max, but if it shines at the Oscars, we might see a broader theatrical release prior to its arrival on streaming platforms.

What is The Brutalist about?

The Brutalist centers on László Toth, an architect who manages to survive the Holocaust and later moves to America, where he chases after the elusive ideal known as the American Dream.

According to A24’s description, the main character László Toth, a visionary architect, leaves post-war Europe in search of a fresh start. His goal is to rebuild his life, career, and relationship with his wife Erzsébet, which were disrupted by shifting borders and political regimes during wartime. The family’s journey takes them to America.

In a foreign land, László adapts to life in Pennsylvania. Here, influential industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren appreciates Laszlo’s knack for construction. However, the pursuit of power and enduring influence often demands a steep price.

In this production, Adrien Brody portrays Toth, accompanied by Felicity Jones as Erzsébet, Alessandro Nivola as Attila – a relative of the character László, and Guy Pearce takes on the role of Harrison Lee Van Buren, an industrialist who significantly impacts László’s life.

Just a heads up: The movie spans an extensive three hours and 35 minutes, with a 15-minute break in between. So, it might be wise to avoid gulping down large drinks prior to settling in.

While waiting, take a look at some upcoming movies in 2025 that you’ll surely get excited about, as well as the TV series you shouldn’t miss out on.
