As a devoted follower, I can’t help but share my excitement about Markus “Notch” Persson’s recent announcement. The genius behind Minecraft is expressing his desire to embark on a new project that could be considered the spiritual successor to the block-based sandbox game we all love. Originally crafted in 2009, this upcoming creation might just continue the legacy that has captured our imaginations for years!
Shortly after sharing a poll regarding his ongoing work, Persson casually mentioned on Twitter that he was essentially hinting at Minecraft 2. He explained that the project he’s working on now combines elements of traditional roguelike games with a first-person, tile-based dungeon-crawler approach.
I essentially revealed that Minecraft 2 is in the works.
It occurred to me that perhaps fans are eager for a new game similar to the original, and I’m enjoying getting back into game development again.
To be honest, I don’t have a particular attachment to which project I tackle first (or if I create additional ones), but I do recognize…— notch (@notch) January 3, 2025
However, thoughts crossed my mind that perhaps there are individuals who appreciate my work but might not have the same fondness for retro nostalgia as I do. They might prefer a spiritual successor to Minecraft instead, and to that, I’d say yes, I would welcome such earnings. This is what Persson expressed in a post announcing the poll.
Undoubtedly, enthusiasts of Minecraft became extremely excited, and when further questioned, Persson made it clear that his talk of a sequel was completely sincere.
In his own words, Persson expressed that he might be on board with creating another game that closely resembles the initial one, as he has grown fond of developing games once more. He doesn’t have a strong preference for which game he creates first (or even if he makes multiple), but he is certain that he will create one. Consequently, he decided to gauge interest by setting up a poll for a spiritual successor to Minecraft.
Although he showed great enthusiasm for the concept, Persson also expressed his concerns about potential pitfalls in creating a Minecraft sequel.
He expressed his aim to be transparent and truthful about it. As he put it, spiritual successors often end up being less impressive or even disappointing. This is something he’s concerned his next game might become, so he’s trying to steer clear of that. Instead, he suggested focusing on what people truly want from him and potentially earning even more money by doing so.
Persson expressed that if there were to be a Minecraft follow-up, any earnings should be used for beneficial purposes. He mentioned that while Minecraft has enjoyed widespread popularity and success, it has also taught him valuable lessons about resilience in the face of failure. In his words, “Success is merely learning how to cope with failure.
Prior to ending his statement, Person clarified that he had no desire to secretly violate the outstanding efforts of the Mojang team regarding Minecraft, and that Microsoft was not attempting to devalue their work in any underhanded manner.
Person stated, regarding Microsoft, who acquired Minecraft in 2014: “I admire them for it, because that’s their line of work. From what I gather, they allow the studio to operate independently, which strikes me as quite just.
Since Microsoft purchased Minecraft in years past, they’ve added spin-offs such as Minecraft Legends and Minecraft Dungeons to the franchise. Regarding a potential sequel, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer mentioned after the 2014 acquisition that his immediate priority was enhancing the original game, rather than planning for a sequel. In 2015, Mojang’s CEO Jonas Martensson stated that there were no conversations about Minecraft 2 at that time. However, neither Microsoft nor Mojang have ruled out the possibility of a sequel completely.
Persson hasn’t shown any sneak peeks of his ongoing project to players yet, so it’s unclear what a Minecraft 2 might resemble, though we can speculate that it would likely preserve its predecessor’s pixelated, cube-laden aesthetic. Alongside the possibility of a playable sequel, Minecraft enthusiasts also have an upcoming blockbuster to anticipate: A Minecraft Movie is scheduled for release in April.
