As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to announce that the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival is continuing its MAMI Select – Filmed on iPhone initiative in its second round. This time, it’s going multilingual, extending its reach to four languages. To guide our aspiring filmmakers, we’ve assembled an esteemed panel of Indian cinema titans as mentors. I can’t wait to see the magic they’ll help bring to life on the silver screen!
This initiative has brought together a group of mentors, which includes the actor-director Konkona Sen Sharma (“A Death in the Gunj”), as well as filmmakers Lijo Jose Pellissery (“Jallikattu”), Vikramaditya Motwane (“CTRL”), and Vetrimaaran (“Viduthalai”). These mentors will provide guidance to the chosen filmmakers, helping them navigate from pre-production all the way through to post-production.
In 2025, we’ll choose four rising directors to produce short movies in Hindi, Malayalam, Marathi, and Tamil. Each director will get a production grant, as well as an iPhone 16 Pro Max and a MacBook Pro for filming and editing purposes.
Sen Sharma appreciates the initiative’s dedication to fostering a space for emerging filmmaking talent across India, while Pellissery expresses his joy upon learning that the program’s goal is to discover and empower directors from various parts of our diverse Indian cinema.
Motwane, resuming his role as mentor, expressed: “Last year’s storytelling and technical skills in the short films left me utterly astonished. I am eagerly anticipating the extraordinary masterpieces that this year’s group of filmmakers will conjure up.
The finished short films, lasting between 20 to 40 minutes each, will have their first public showing at a special event, followed by their release on the MAMI YouTube channel.
Festival organizer Shivendra Singh Dungarpur points out that for the first time, MAMI is accepting applications from across the country. He expresses his desire to expand upon this successful endeavor, aiming to offer this chance to even more up-and-coming filmmakers next year.
Applications are open through Jan. 19.
