⚠️ HEADS UP: The following article reveals significant plot points from the finale of Edward Berger’s “Conclave.

Megyn Kelly voiced her disapproval of Edward Berger’s “Conclave” on X, labeling it an offensive anti-Catholic movie. This highly-praised drama features Ralph Fiennes in the role of a cardinal who exposes hidden secrets and scandals within the Vatican while orchestrating a papal conclave to select the next pope. The film initially screened at the Telluride Film Festival last year and has since gained significant attention as a strong contender for this year’s Oscars.

Kelly expressed her disapproval to her 3.4 million followers, stating that she recently watched ‘Conclave’ and found it to be an extremely offensive film against Catholicism. She criticized the actors Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and director Edward Berger (among others) for participating in such a production.

Kelly strongly objected to the surprising finale of the movie, where it was unveiled that the newly elected Pope, Vincent Cardinal Benitez (portrayed by Carlos Diehz), was intersex. Fiennes’ character consents to hide this revelation as the Pope’s election is announced publicly.

Kelly posted that the shocking revelation at the end is that the Pope is intersex. She wishes she had known before watching it because there aren’t many likeable characters in the movie. The only ones who seem decent are the intersex pope and a cardinal who conceals this secret – which, of course, is glorified in Catholic culture. Kelly finds it repulsive and disturbing that such a film was released on streaming platforms just before Christmas. It seems like mocking or belittling Christians/Catholics is always acceptable.

In “Conclave”, Fiennes collaborates with Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto, and Isabella Rossellini. Prior to the 2025 Golden Globes, where “Conclave” is nominated for six awards, including best motion picture drama, best director, and best actor (Fiennes), Kelly voiced her criticism about X. Notably, “Conclave” shares the lead in the 2025 Critic’s Choice Awards with “Wicked”, each receiving 11 nominations.

Kelly found no appeal in the movie, but film critic Peter Debruge highly commended “Conclave” in his review. He expressed that it featured one of the most rewarding twists in recent memory, a daring move that catches you off guard yet rekindles trust (though perhaps not for everyone, but definitely for those feeling disillusioned). Furthermore, Debruge admired Ralph Fiennes’ nuanced portrayal as his character grapples with inner turmoil between devotion and doubt.

“Conclave” is now playing in theaters and available to stream on Peacock.
