‘Home Improvement’ Star Zachery Ty Bryan Arrested on Domestic Violence Charges

As a long-time fan of ’90s sitcoms and a movie buff, I find it truly disheartening to see the downfall of Zachery Ty Bryan, who played Brad Taylor in “Home Improvement.” The actor’s troubled life outside the limelight is a stark contrast to his charming portrayal as the eldest son on the beloved sitcom.

Having grown up watching Bryan navigate the challenges of teenagehood and adolescence through the character of Brad, it’s hard not to feel a pang of sadness seeing him struggle with legal troubles and domestic violence charges. His arrests for DUI, contempt of court, assault, robbery, and multiple instances of domestic violence are deeply concerning and raise questions about his well-being.

It’s important to remember that Bryan was just nine years old when “Home Improvement” premiered and concluded his acting career at the age of 17. The show brought him fame and success, but it seems that he never fully found his footing in life beyond the small screen. I can’t help but wonder if the pressures of stardom and the expectations placed upon child actors played a role in his current struggles.

In a strange twist of fate, Bryan married his former girlfriend, Johnny Faye Cartwright, who was involved in one of his domestic violence incidents. It seems that their relationship has been plagued by turmoil, with multiple arrests and charges against him. I can’t help but think that they should have called the show “Home Improvement: The Aftermath.”

It’s always sad to see a talented actor fall from grace, but it serves as a reminder that fame and fortune do not guarantee happiness or stability. I hope that Bryan finds the help he needs to turn his life around and that he can once again find peace and joy in his personal and professional life. And on a lighter note, maybe one day we’ll see him guest-starring on a sitcom called “Home Improvement: The Reboot – Redemption Edition.

43-year-old Zachery Ty Bryan, best known for playing the eldest son in the ABC sitcom “Home Improvement” alongside Tim Allen, was taken into custody in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Thursday and charged with domestic violence of the second degree. According to county records, he is currently detained and being held on a $10,000 bond.

Over the last few months, I’ve found myself in quite a few sticky situations with the law. Just last October, I was taken into custody in Oklahoma for driving under the influence and operating a vehicle without a valid license. To add to that, back in February, I was arrested on serious charges of felony DUI and misdemeanor contempt of court.

Previously, Bryan wasn’t a stranger to charges related to domestic violence. Back in February 2021, he faced accusations of felony assault, third-degree robbery, and assault in Oregon. These allegations stemmed from an incident where he was said to have strangled his girlfriend, Johnny Faye Cartwright, the year before. He admitted guilt for a fourth-degree felony assault, serving a week in prison and being supervised on probation for three years. Interestingly, Cartwright and Bryan got married in 2021 and share three children together. In July 2023, he was taken into custody once more and this time faced charges of domestic assault for the second time.

For eight seasons, Bryan portrayed Brad Taylor, the eldest child on the popular ’90s sitcom “Home Improvement.” He was a primary cast member throughout the series, which began when he was just nine years old and ended as he turned 17. Alongside his role in the show, he made appearances in movies like “First Kid” and guest-starred on shows such as “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “Reading Rainbow.” Following additional roles in “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,” “Smallville,” “Veronica Mars,” and “Burn Notice,” Bryan decided to step away from acting in 2009.
