As a seasoned observer of societal trends and a firm believer in the power of social media, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent incident at Assumption University in Massachusetts. Having grown up watching the original “To Catch A Predator” series, I was initially intrigued by the concept of using technology to expose potential threats to our children. However, this TikTok challenge has taken things too far.
As a parent myself, I find it alarming that young adults are engaging in such dangerous and reckless behavior. The fact that these students lured an innocent man to campus under false pretenses, only to attack him, is nothing short of appalling. It’s not a game, it’s real life, and the consequences can be dire.
I remember the days when I was in college, and we pranked our fair share of people. But those pranks were harmless and never involved any form of physical violence or deceit. This TikTok challenge crosses a line that should never be crossed. It’s not just about catching a predator; it’s about taking the law into one’s own hands, which is not only illegal but also extremely dangerous.
In today’s world, where social media is ubiquitous and has the power to shape public opinion, it’s crucial that we use it responsibly. We should educate ourselves and others about online safety, rather than encouraging reckless behavior. I can only hope that these students learn from their mistakes and grow as individuals, so they can make better choices in the future.
On a lighter note, I guess if you’re going to get into trouble on TikTok, at least don’t do it during your grandmother’s funeral! Talk about bad timing.
A number of pupils from Assumption University, Massachusetts, have been accused of kidnapping and conspiring against someone, following claims that they enticed an individual onto the university grounds via Tinder, with the intention of participating in a TikTok challenge.
The famous television series “To Catch a Predator,” hosted by Chris Hansen, focused on exposing individuals who were under suspicion of intending to meet with minors, but in reality, the encounters were staged.
Since then, the show’s success has led to numerous copies in the streaming realm and a TikTok trend causing trouble for certain students.
On December 4th, the police were made aware of a troubling event that allegedly took place on October 1st. In this incident, a man was enticed to the campus by an 18-year-old student using Tinder, but instead of a friendly encounter, he found himself confronted by a group of people who attacked him, which can be described as a violent crowd or an unruly group.
University students charged with kidnapping after TikTok challenge
As reported by CBS, Joaquin Smith, Isabella Trudeau, Kevin Carroll, Kelsy Brainard, and Easton Randall find themselves accused of kidnapping and conspiring together, following an escalation of their initial challenge.
18-year-old me, Kelsy Brainard, utilized Tinder as a means to extend an invitation to a gentleman, with the intention of meeting up at campus. Our plan was to recreate the popular TikTok trend where one attempts to lure a potential threat to a specific location, only instead of assaulting or causing harm, we intended to either contact the authorities or peacefully engage them in conversation.
According to reports, Brainard claimed to have informed the police at Assumption University that she was a victim, as a man she’d encountered on Tinder attempted to meet an underage girl at the university, making her feel uncomfortable.
Instead, it’s worth noting that a complaint was subsequently lodged with the Worcester Police Department by the individual who asserted he had been assaulted by a group of around 25 people.
Or:
It’s also important to mention that, following the incident, a complaint was made to the Worcester Police Department by someone who alleged they had been attacked by a group of at least 25 individuals.
According to the police report, the man, who had come to Worcester solely for his grandmother’s funeral, encountered a girl within the reception hall. However, a gathering of students then confronted him.
Additionally, the report mentions that initially, the man was held back, but somehow, he broke free. During this commotion, he was hit several times, including a blow to the face, and his car door was forcefully shut on him.
According to the findings, it was established that the video evidence showed Ms. Brainard’s report to be untrue and made up. Furthermore, it was discovered that the incident she reported as an act of victimization was actually fabricated to deceive the police into thinking there was a sexual predator on campus. This was done in an attempt to hide the fact that a group of students without legal authority lured the subject to campus with the intention of catching him as a sexual predator.
The police added that the main student culprits had discussed among themselves what messages they should send to lure the man onto campus.
The students were strategically assembled in the lounge with the intention of secretly capturing this individual… This operation was carried out by using cunning tactics or disguise.
An official representative from the university described the students’ actions, if true, as “reprehensible” and expressed their disapproval towards “any acts of aggression or unacceptable conduct.
Besides the allegations of assault and battery involving a hazardous object, Carroll is additionally accused. Meanwhile, Brainard is under scrutiny for charges related to potential interference with witnesses.
The students are scheduled to be arraigned in Worcester District Court on January 16th.
