Asmongold explains why he doesn’t play World of Warcraft anymore

As a devoted fan who has followed Asmongold’s journey since his early days as a World of Warcraft content creator, I have to admit, it’s quite surprising to see him stepping away from the game that made him famous. Over the years, I’ve watched countless hours of his engaging and entertaining streams, marveling at his deep knowledge and passion for WoW. However, after hearing Asmon’s recent explanation about finding the game boring and unfulfilling, I can’t help but empathize with him.

As a viewer who has also invested thousands of hours into the MMO, I too have experienced that sense of exhaustion when it comes to grinding content in WoW. It’s not easy to keep up with the ever-evolving meta and constantly changing mechanics. But what sets Asmon apart is his ability to create compelling content out of even the most mundane tasks, making him a true master of his craft.

Despite his decision to step away from WoW, I still have faith that Asmongold will find new and exciting content to share with his community. After all, he’s proven time and again that he can adapt and thrive in any situation. Plus, who knows? Maybe the next World of Warcraft expansion or update will reignite his passion for the game once more.

In the meantime, I’ll be eagerly waiting to see what new adventures Asmon embarks on, whether it’s streaming Just Chatting or delving into other games that pique his interest. And who knows, maybe one day he’ll even find a way to make farming potatoes in Farming Simulator 2025 entertaining for millions of viewers!

One straightforward explanation is that, despite the resurgence of World of Warcraft’s popularity among streamers, Asmongold has chosen not to play it anymore.

Originally renowned as one of the top World of Warcraft (WoW) content creators online, Asmon’s ardor for Blizzard’s MMO has lessened over time. Despite the ups and downs, this Twitch broadcaster has generally persisted with it, playing through both the contemporary and Classic updates, but that has recently shifted.

In contrast to the 1,420 hours he spent streaming in the “Just Chatting” category, Asmon dedicated only a fraction of that time – 108 hours – to World of Warcraft (WoW) streaming in 2024, as indicated by data gathered from SullyGnome.

Despite World of Warcraft’s widespread popularity during different periods, such as when The War Within was launched, and most recently, the intense battles in the hardcore mode between well-known streamers like sodapoppin and Tyler1.

It seems that Asmon has been avoiding World of Warcraft for a straightforward reason, as he explained in his December 29 stream: “It’s due to the fact that the game is quite dull.

Asmongold argues he’s seen and done it all in WoW

A viewer inquired, ‘Why don’t you play World of Warcraft?’ on the live stream.” To which Asmon replied, “I get asked about WoW daily, and it’s understandable since I used to create a lot of content around it.

Over the years, he invested countless hours into the MMO, but today, he declared it as “uninteresting and peculiar.

As someone who has invested countless hours into World of Warcraft over the years, I must admit that my enthusiasm for the game has waned significantly. The thrill of leveling up, exploring new zones, and raiding with friends no longer provides the same sense of fulfillment it once did. My priorities have shifted, and I find myself drawn towards other pursuits. However, I cannot rule out a potential return to Azeroth in the future, as my feelings about the game may change. For now, though, I simply cannot muster the motivation to log in and play WoW; it’s just not something I want to do at this point in my life.

To be honest, I’ve been around the block a few times, and after years of trying out different games, I find myself uninterested in this one because it feels like old ground to me. I’ve already explored similar gameplay mechanics in my past experiences, so it doesn’t hold much excitement or novelty for me anymore.

Asmon begins discussing WoW at the 02:52:40 mark below.

Regarding the current rise in popularity driven by intense game streams capturing attention, Asmon isn’t inclined to accept such a demanding task. Despite people urging him to do so, he mentioned that it’s the primary expectation, but he chooses to steer clear of it due to his gaming viewpoint. Instead of seeking competition, he enjoys relaxing his mind while streaming games.

I tend to avoid games that require intense focus. More often than not, my mind is wandering rather than being fully present. When I do need to concentrate, it becomes quite stressful for me.

“I don’t feel like I have to earn respect by playing video games, that’s stupid.”

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been eagerly awaiting news about the next World of Warcraft expansion or significant update for Classic WoW. However, it seems that Asmongold, one of my favorite streamers, might not be returning to the MMO anytime soon. Though he’s kept an open mind, his current actions suggest a clear separation from the game at this moment in time.
